Releasing and thumbing the spool while fighting fish
I just listened to a musky podcast and the reel repair guy said it was a good idea to use thumb to stop the drag from being damaged when landing large muskys.

Any other musky/pike nuts here?

BCP rods vs Brand Name Rods
I have had 3 pro qualifiers, 1 carbonlight, 2 signature titanium 8’s, 2 signature size 30’s, and a platinum, all baitcasters. Also lots of crbonlight rods and signature rods. The pro qualifiers still function well after 8-10 years. The carbonlights cast really well as do all the others above the pro qualifier price range. I have never had a single problem with any of them. And I do almost no maintenance for them. Just bought my first non bps setup this week, a daiwa lexa 300 hd paired with the 2020 st croix mojo musky rod as my finesse musky setup. I always bought these bps products at either Black Friday sale or spring classic sale so the price was reduced heavily. For the reduced price, not sure there are better values.

Any other musky/pike nuts here?
I live in eastern pa, not a lot of musky lakes in the area. I just started targeting musky in the last two years. This is by far my biggest musky. I fish 2-3 times a month, maybe 4-5 hours a trip. My main lake is only 150-200 acres. I fish solo in my 10’ pond prowler. My dilemma is that I bring a musky rod and a couple bass rods and try fishing both on the same trip. Naturally it’s not that productive since I’m only Musky fishing 1- 1.5 hours before I start losing patience and start going for bass. Really need to find the correct balance. I usually catch one musky a year. This musky was such a thrilling experience that I’m now going for musky much more of the time. I just picked up a lexa 300 hd reel and am waiting for the 2020 mojo musky 8’6” heavy rod for my basically finesse musky fishing gear.

Can I use this setup for Swimbaits...and Musky?
So I got my lexa 300 hd and threw it today on my 806 dobyns fury. I had been warned that the 806 reel, seat doesn’t hold the lexa very well and the reel can become unseated while casting. I was skeptical but I tightened the reel seat as tight as possible. About the 8th cast the reel came off during the cast. So I am going to return the dobyns and get an actual musky rod. I was thinking mojo musky rod, 8’ or 8’6” heavy (2-8 ounceS). I generally use 100 lb mono leader with 80lb main braid. I don’t anticipate throwing anything over 6 ounces. Probably not more than 4oz. I often fish solo on my 10pm pond prowler. After catching my first significant musky ( tiger in my pic)which in eastern pa is definitely a trophy in my book, I got a drifter xl net so net size should be covered. My lake is less than 200 acres and is electric only. I have all the tools I need. I lost a large musky the other week when I was bass fishing and only had 20 lb flouro leader on my jig. I didn’t realize it was a musky until I was about to net the fish and pulled it up to where I could see it. I held rod with one hand and tried to net with the other. It saw the net and went down, cutting the 20 lb flouro. Since then, I have switched all my setups to include 100 lb mono. Probably will get less bass bites but the thought of losing a shot at a big musky is too scary. So now my question: would you recommend the mojo musky heavy and in which length? I won’t be throwing full size bull dawgs or medussas or anything of that nature. Not even crazy about throwing bucktail, but if I do, it will be of the babygirl size. Money is a factor. Really want to keep around $200 or less. With coupon code, I can get the mojo musky for around $210. Appreciate your thoughts. Thanks.

Lexa 300hd vs tatula 300
Just saw that the tatula 300 has been released recently and I just got my lexa 300 hd today. What are differences and why would one choose over the other?

Choosing lexa 300 hd over tranx 300 for finesse musky/bass setup
I actually just ordered the 7.4 lexa 300 hd. Good point with 8.1. I decided I would rather have a little more power to reel fish than a little more speed retrieving lure.

Choosing lexa 300 hd over tranx 300 for finesse musky/bass setup
After immersing myself in this forum’s archives, googling numerous websites and reviews, exhausting youtube videos, I think i have decided to get a lexa 300 hd in either 8.1 or 7.4, For my finesse musky/ bass swimbait setup. It was over the tranx 300. Good decision?

What is your favorite big bait reel
If you had to choose one reel, which one of the three would you chose and why? Thanks

All around Swimbait Rod
What weight baits are you throwing with the 806 vs the 795? What is the heaviest bait you feel comfortable throwing with the 795?

What is your favorite big bait reel
I am looking for a size 300 reel to throw 1-4 oz swimbaits (mostly bull shads and bull gills) for bass and a possible musky on occasion. I will be using 65lb braid with 80lb mono leader. Is there one you would recommend over the others?

Can i get some advice
I am looking for a setup to throw 5” 6” bull shads and 6” bull gill for primary musky that bass might also hit. Thinking 806 dobyns fury with either diawa Lexa 300 or shimano tranx 300. Fishing in eastern pa. Any advice?

Fishing podcast
An excellent podcast is “tackletalk podcast”. Andrew does a weekly 30 minute ish podcast covering bass fishing and also does interviews. These interviews have included an excellent one with gary dobyns of dobyns rods and also with a fishing biologist that was quite insightful. Easy to listen to and interesting.
