Phenix Rods Feather or dobyns fr703c

Featured Replies

Going to add another rod to the arsenal. pretty much just going to a setup for plastics, senkos, texas, creature maybe light jigs, soft swimbait light single hook baits. The Phenix feather would be there 6'9" or 7'1" MH XF. Would this be a good rod or should i just add a 4th dobyns the collection?

I've fished both line of rods, and both are good solid rods.  That said, fish with what you know/like.  If Dobyns have been good to you, stick with them and add another Dobyns to the collection.  I personally have three different models of Dobyns and love each for the purpose they were purchased to fish.  Dobyns Xtasy for my power finesse fishing, Champion Extremes for my heavier moving baits and just picked up an XP for even heavier moving baits.  Really like the line up and the rods that Dobyns is putting out right now.

I do like the Dobyns but it is the only rod i have tried. Im just intrigued with how light and sensitive the Phenix feather felt. Will the XF action work compared to most other MHF rods?

I've had the Fury 703c and still have a Fury 663c as my Jerkbait rod, it works ok for light T-Rigs and Jigs but not my 1st choice, I like it better for moving baits.

I don't own a Phenix Feather, but I have casted a friends before and their powers are probably even more over-rated than Dobyns. I would consider going with the Heavy Power Phenix Feather for that stuff and it will still be a lot lighter than the Fury.

I started with the Fury 703c, which led to me buying 14 Dobyns rods, but now I've sold a lot of them and I'm trying different brands out. You can always go back to Dobyns if you find that's what you like the best.

I've fished and owned a lot of Dobyns and Phenix Feather rods and models. Most would say to get one power above intended. Like a MH = M for both manufacturers.

Here's my take on the 7'1 H Feather rod, which is a IMO too soft for any hook penetration needs. If you run light wire hooks and braid I think you'll be okay with Senkos and very light Texas rigs. The action of the rod is more moderate/fast IMO. I used it for vibrating jigs before I sold it off.

The best Feather rod in their line up is the 7'3 XXH, it's no where near a XXH, but man it's light, has a soft tip and good backbone. Can do frogs and 1/4 - 1/2 oz plus plastic T-rigs fine.
