Replacing seat and grips from the bottom end

Featured Replies

Hi all. I received some donated rods for the high school club I coach and one rod had a broken reel seat both heel and toe. It’s an old green Crucial and the rod is in otherwise great shape. Is it possible to replace the reel seat and grips without removing the guides? I have no experience in rod building and repair, so please excuse the cluelessness of the question. I just would like to get the rod to a kid if it’s not too big a job. My area is lacking in guys who do rod repair.

@Delaware Valley Tackle - Mike, want to give this guy some hints?

Pinch the cork or EVA off in chunks with pliers, split the seat on two sides with a dremel cutoff wheel, insert and twist a screwdriver. Be very careful not to cut into the blank. Remove any arbor material and epoxy residue with light heat, plastic scraper and sandpaper again being careful not to get into the blank material. Order a standard 16mm reel seat and grip with tenon and butt cap. The grip will have to be teamed to fit over the butt end which will make It loose in the front due to rod taper. Build masking tape arbors to produce a snug fit, same with the seat. Leave 1/8-3/16 gaps between arbors so epoxy bonds to blank. Use paste epoxy completely encapsulating the arbors. Clean overage with paper towels and denatured alcohol.

Being at a high school you may have access to a lathe, have the rear grip turned to the inside diameter of the grip, which is bigger than the rod's butt. Saves a bunch of work on grip and blank cleanup and arbors, slip on the new non exposed reel seat, slip on the grip, than the butt cap, done.

@Delaware Valley Tackle Thank you for that- very much appreciated! I did some looking around and saw Mud Hole has a CRB Turnkey kit for $160 I think I’ll grab. I was unsure of reamer sizes and was thinking of getting a whole set to be sure and then figured, for a little more scratch I’d have the basics for most jobs- there are more than a couple of rods missing a guide here or there. Again, much thanks to you. @spoonplugger1 Thanks for that tip- smart! Unfortunately my district got rid of all shop classes in the 90’s?‍♂️.
