I have a line on a used Dobyns Fury 703c and I plan on pairing it with a Curado K HG. I am hoping to use this as my moving baits setup. Mostly 3/8oz spinnerbaits, 1/4-3/8oz square bill crankbaits and some soft plastics. 

 

Does this seem reasonable for this setup? Love to hear from people who have this rod. 

I have the Fury 733C so essentially the same rod, just three inches longer. It is one of my two go-to rods for treble hook moving baits--squarebills, mid diving crankbaits, and I really really like it for jerkbaits. For me it has a little more flex than I like for a single hook bait like a spinnerbait, so I throw those on a slightly stiffer rod. For worms and other T rigged baits, I like it a lot for its sensitivity, but maybe give up a bit on hooksets. Of course I find that tradeoff a lot, and to me for a bottom bouncing bait I'd rather have the sensitivity. All in all a great rod.

 

 

I Do not have that rod but have several Dobyns rods.  The rod you are looking is a M/H . The Dobyns rods I use are the Sierra SA 683C & the Champion XP DC 733C  which are also M/H just a different length. That rod your looking at will be fine.  I have the reel your looking at is a good reel. If you want to save a few bucks look at the Shimano SLX mgl 70 it is a good solid reel. I like the mgl feature it will give a little better casting distance & is designed for lighter lures. I use a lower speed reel for moving baits something in the 6. something range & will work for what you plan to use it for.

Yep, the 703 would work great with those baits. I loved it as a jerkbait rod, so I got the 663c also. I was also surprised how well it threw squarebills. I've had reels from 7.9 oz to 6.3 oz on mine and somehow it doesn't seem to affect the balance at all, it's still great.

I already own the Curado K and also the SLX MGL you spoke of, I like both reels very much. Was thinking of using the K with the dobyns rod, but I guess it would make more sense to use the SLX MGL with the dobyns given the light weights I will be using. I am way to analytical

I had the 703 and 704.  I preferred throwing spinnerbaits on the 704.  Loved throwing lipless cranks on the 703.

I have a 703c Fury, I like it for moving baits like spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, swim jigs, but I prefer my 705cb for all treble hooked stuff.

 

The only exception is jerkbaits, I like a little faster rod for jerkbaits and use the 703c over the 705cb for those.
