May Need Starting Battery?

I have a 04 19 ft. Triton and the starting battery is 5 years old. I had it out this last weekend and it started ok but, I have my first tournament this weekend. I think that the live well runs off the starting battery so I would hate to have a problem starting my motor later ( Merc. 150 EFI ). So what kind of battery should I get that will not break  :-/ :'(the bank?

Have you tried popping the caps and ensuring it is full of distilled water and acid? Even maintenance free batteries will last longer if topped off and properly charged. Today's batteries are "supposed to last 7 years". I am told that they do if properly maintained. The starting battery in my boat is a 2005. I filled it and charged it recently and it's doing great. Top your battery off with distilled water and slow charge it and things should be okay.

A five year old cranking battery, don't bother with it, get a new.  That can be the most expensive battery you could ever own when it burns out your rectifier/stator.   A good cranking/dual purpose battery is generaly less than $100.   As for brands, I like Deka batteries, they are great batteries and I get them wholesale.   I think DieHard, Interstate or any of the other major brands are ok.

Are starting batteries and trolling motor batteries the same ? And what should I look for in cold crank battery ( how many cold crank amps )?

They are different.  You want a cranking/starting battery with the highest reserve capacity.  I put an Interstate 24M-XHD with 135 RC in my Skeeter in '05 and it is still running strong.  For sure your livewell and most electronics run off the cranking battery.

If you can find an area distributor you might get a better deal price wise on Interstates.  Probably be more than $75 if not.  12 month no cost replacement and pro-rated after that up to 30 months. I have had good luck with them for a good many years.

Would this be a series 27 battery? I think that is what I have for my starting battery.

I went right to Advance Auto Parts about a 2 months ago and got 2 Marine Deep Cycle Batteries for $130.00. Some say their junk but I sold my other boat that I put one in it and it was 5 years old and still running strong. My friend who bought the boat is still using it.

Nope. That would be a series 24 battery.  My guess would be that if your running your original batteries that you have a group 24 for a cranking batt.   I use SRM-27's for my trolling motor.

If you head to http://www.interstatebatteries.com and click on "vehicle batteries" then "marine" it will take you to a page where you can click on "features/specs" and see all of their batteries and figure out what you might want to put in there.  Then go shopping with that model/size info and maybe find a deal.  They do have a series 27 cranking battery that has a whopping 180 RC.  It's a brute and quite heavy.

Thanks for the info, I did take a peek at my battery and it is a Interstate 24 SRM ! I called a Gander store and they have both the 24 SRM and the 24M XHD,both are $89.99. I do have a gift card for $60.00 so  that would help. Not sure what the differance is between the two batteries? [i did go on the Interstates web site but they don't give much info between the two.

I just checked my Interstates and here is the difference in the two.

SRM-27  600 CCA  750 MCA

24M-XHD 800 CCA 1000 MCA

The SRM series is a Deep cycle/starting battery.  The 24M series is a cranking/starting battery.  So you would want the 24M for cranking and running all your electronics.  SRM for the TM.
