Skipping the unskippable

Skipping is made out to be hard but it really isn't.  It's one if those things that can be made easier by simply dialing kn your equipment.  A rod with a soft tip and the right amount of weight in the lure will zip that lure out easier with little effort.  I think the mistake I see alot is guys trying to skip a bait that is too light for said rod, and a combination of playing it to safe with the reel too tight or to too heavy on the breaks.

Something I skip that shouldn't be skipped is a jerkbait, sometimes it hit the water wrong and is a pain, but if I can side arm it and roll cast it to a dock, I can normally get another 10 feet under the dock.  DEADLY... FISH ARENT USED TO SEEING HARD JERKBAITS UNDER DOCKS.  For me I mess it up some, but when it lands on its side its money.

With a bait caster I have to be a little more mindful of weight vs rod action but I still prefer a shorter rod especially for accuracy.

I think that’s what a lot of anglers suggest using also, some like longer some like shorter but the majority I see suggest using a shorter rod.

There might be a couple other reasons for my preference for shorter rods.  Aside from not being very tall my boat doesn't have a deck. When I stand in my boat my feet are below the surface of the water. A lof of people making recommendations are fishing out of a bass boat. Heck, yesterday was a BUSY day on the water. Ramp parking was about full. I was the only non-bass boat there.

I do own some longer rods but they don't get much use because they're more trouble than they're worth.

I don't even try flipping treble hook baits let alone skipping them when touching them.  In the past I get in a nice cadence and then not let go of the lure at the right time and instant hook in finger.  I am a slow learner, it has happened more than once or twice.  I like to catch fish, but don't have to for a living or entertainment.  My skipping will be with a mh spinning rod and appropriate line.  That's just me.  To each his/her own.  Enjoy.

I skip jigs, frogs, chatterbaits and swimbaits all the time.  Never tried treble hook lures of any kind.  One thing I really like though is a buzzbait.  I've found that replacing the skirt with a toad makes a big difference.  I noticed no one around here did that and thought it would be worth a try.  It's got me some bites I couldn't get with the other lures.
