Looking at getting a Dobyns champion xp 704c for texas rigs and jigs. Are they pretty lightweight? Are they worth the 230 dollar price tag?

Dobyns Sierra & Champion XP are currently on sale at Tackle Warehouse. Both rods are great quality rods, I've had both model series of their rods. I currently have Champion XP rods. You do have a choice on the Champion XP model if you prefer full or split grip. I'd go with the 734 which is the most versatile all around rod in the Dobyns lineup as long as your not trying to punch a 1oz into heavy cover.

champion is without a doubt a much more sensitive rod in my hands.

They're not light, but they feel that way due to the care Dobyns puts toward balance once there's a reel on the rod. 

 

Paired with an OG Zillion, this combo is a staple in my arsenal that I mostly use for spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, bladed jigs, paddletail swimbaits and larger topwaters.

 

How heavy are you planning on the jigs/t-rigs?

1/4-3/4oz texas rigs and jigs I’m thinking

3/4 jig/T-rig with worm or trailer gonna be over an once.

 

735 would be a better choice IMO.

Or at least the 705

 

As Bull says - a 3/4oz jig with trailer is going to go over 1oz...while you COULD use the 704 with care, it's definitely not ideal.

Agree with the guys above saying 3/4 oz will be too much in the 704

I have a 735 Champion, and a 3/4oz jig will definitely be more suited for this model. Just as others said, Dobyns rods aren't the lightest; there're plenty more rods lighter than them. But they're the most balanced rods I've used.

Most the time it will be 1/2oz or 3/8oz sometimes 3/4oz.

Well, as the 705 is rated down to 3/8, and a 3/8 jig with trailer weighs closer to 1/2-5/8 when all is said and done. I still think the 705 or 735 is your best bet. It'll handle the smaller jigs and the 3/4 jigs will still be in it's rated range even with all the additions.

 

Remember: a jig's posted weight is JUST for the head. The hook and skirt add to that, and the trailer adds more.

I think you will be fine with the 4 power rod.  But if you want more power for the 5

I have the 704 and 705, for 3/4oz with trailer, I would go with the 705.

I just got a Champion 705, and really like it. I haven't fished it yet, but it feels great and well balanced. To me it feels just a hair heavier than my two Loomis  IMX 843 MBR rods.

It seems to have a somewhat similar taper too. Nice rod.
