i would say no i have a 50 lb on a 14 ft jon with a 2.5 merc and it is just about perfect my lowest speed is not to fast and the highest speep is good and fast to hop around short distances i would go with a 70 to 80 if i were you or a 101 if  u can afford it

It should work, I have a 55lb on my 18ft f/s, and it moves it around nicely. I can imagine yours is alot lighter than mine too. But if you can try to bump it up, you can never have too much power.

It will work but it will be less than ideal if it does not have variable speed. Most motors in that size do not.

I don't see why not.  You won't win any races, but it will get the job done without a problem.

I have a 72 on my 17' Tracker and it is great. Next will be an 80 Maxxum Pro though. It came with a 37, which I immediately ripped off.

Get the biggest one you can afford, shure ! everything 's fine and then ...... the wind begins to blow, after a few times such has happened you kick yourself on the rear end for not purchasing a bigger one in the first place.

I agree. I have a 17 ft Nitro with 90 HP and had a 46 lb on it.  In the wind you want larger. I would drain the battery trying to hold in the wind. I now have a 70 lb and never drain the battery. If you can not afford to go larger try a wind sock, they work great. If wind is not an issue you should be fine. Unfortuantely I only get to fish on the weekend so I will battle wind, cold rain and sometimes snow.

is this an aluminum or glass boat? Aluminum boats act like miniature  sail boats and glass boats are heavy. Either way I would never go buy a motor that small. If its whats on your boat now and your thinking about upgrading then you should *IF* you have enough money to get at least a 55# variable speed motor, however go bigger if you can.

From experience, I would have to say NO! Go bigger. I have a 17'6' Sea Nymph GLS 175, Deep V Alum. With a 75hp.  When I bought it she had a 36#. That TM sucked way to small. I moved up to a 55# and hated that TM still to small. Didn't have the power to deal with the style of fishing I do, (I am on the TM all day and fish a lot over current and heavy weeds, also the wind does blow the boat around alot) also even with 2 batteries would not last a whole tournament day. So when that TM was ripped off the boat at Erie. It was time for a new TM. Time to move up.  I thought of a 24 volt TM in the 70-80# range. I already was carrying 3 batteries   so I went big (ok a bit over board) to a 36volt 109# motor and it is the best thing ever. Heavy wind, heavy current. Heavy weeds, even long long days on the water are no problem now.  That being said a 109# way be too much, but I would really think about a 24 volt in the #70+ range. Now bigger is better in TMs. get the biggest you can afford and carry the batteries.

I also have a Tracker PTX 175 (17'6') with a 25hp on it has a 45# tm and its ok. But in heavy weeds it sucks. I am planning on moving up to an 82# TM. I can only carry 2 TM batteries so a 24-volt is the biggest I can get.
