Jerkbait rod for certain bait

Featured Replies

I have a 6’6 Medium-Fast casting rod I use for   jerkbaits. I recently picked up a 3/5oz 11ft 4.5 inch KVD Jerkbait (not sure if that’s the exact   length) The issue is that the bait feels heavy for the rod, will it be able to handle it or should I upgrade to a MHF 7ft? The only problem with this rod is I just spooled it up with 12lb mono for crankbaits. Thanks- Cole

Hi Cole, the best way to know it's just to try that KVD jerkbait with your 6'6 rod.

I don't know that particular bait but I use LC flash pointer 115 size and Vision Oneten R+2 and +3, the heaviest jerks I throw, with a St Croix 6'8 medium-xtra fast tip (1/4-5/8) and it  perfectly works.

These baits are pretty close to the weight of your KVD, despite the fact that megabass rates all the visions oneten R type the same weight (1/2oz) but in reality the +2 and +3 with their long bills are heavier than that.

If your concern it's about the rod casting ability to throw the bait you have to try on the water, if that bait load your rod too much than switch to the 7'MH.

It comes to play a "personal choice" factor as well.

I don't like slow action rod for jerkbaits because I want the bait to react quickly with sharp movements also if a slower action sometimes helps to cast further.

KVD throws that on a MH...

I throw a lot of 1/2 oz to 1 oz jerk baits. I utilize a mh moderate action with braid and a lmh extra fast action with mono/flouro.

I know, I was just saying which one was the better option for the bait, because I spooled the MH with mono for crankbaits. Just wanting to know if it will still go as deep?

The different line will most certainly affect diving depth. To get maximum diving depth you should be using fluoro or braid to fluoro leader (my preferred method).  I also would stick to a rod under 7'. Maybe invest in a jerkbait specific rod.
