Tow vehicle

Featured Replies

My girlfriend wants to buy a boat specifically a fish and ski.  At the moment I don't have a truck and all she has is an 07 honda crv 4cyl 4wd.  I told her she wouldn't be able to tow much with that but she doesn't want to believe me.  Honda states towing capacity at #1500.  Would we be able to tow a 16-17' fish/ski with this vehicle.  We are going to look at 94 Stratos 16'5" w/ 115hp.  This would only be temporary until I get a new truck or SUV.

Honestly would have to say no, the CRV wouldn't handle either boat. Power, braking, and control of the trailer would all be issues. The Stratos would be about the same.

A small jon maybe, but wouldn't go over 14ft.

Nope, sorry, you could 'probably' pull it but since its not made for towing it will burn up the tranny and be VERY UNSAFE since the brakes are WAY undersized for towing. Buy a cheap beater truck to pull it if your not ready to buy a new truck at the moment

Uncle Nick says,

"Don't get the cart before the horse" .

Get your tow vehicle first, then the boat.

Ain't got nuthin else to say.

Good Luck

Could you pull it?  Yes.

Will you pull it for long?  No.

HAHA.....I go on-line to see for myself if the CRV can pull a boat and look what I stumble upon! Thank you Google!

SOooo I guess the answer is officially NO, the CRV will not tow a fish and ski boat.  :'(

Time for you to get a new truck honey!

Anyone out there selling a moderately priced truck with < 100k miles??

KevO is this ^ your girl that posted? Typical you told her that no it wouldn't tow and she still had to verify. She's a pretty one by the way, hope you can hang on until she gets a boat ;)

Yes she is my GF.  She always has to check to make sure I'm not lying to her.

Well you could, sorta. I have a Ford Taurus wagon, and it pulls a 18ft f/s with a 115, It struggles and when it gets going it doesnt wanna stop. Probably very unsafe. Tongue weight is also a major problem it pulls down the whole back of the car and bottoms out quite often. I'm sure it will ruin the shocks.

So tell your girlfriend either wait till one of you has a truck or risk driving an unsafe car that will most likely break due to the stress on the car.

Just my .02 cents

Only reason I use my car is because I tow it once a year to my cottage and leave it there.

In 1965 I bought my first big boat, it was a new 15' GlassMaster with an 80 Merc.  I towed it for almost two years with a 1962 VW Karman Ghia.  Only had to replace the clutch once because the ramp was a little on the steep side and had to ride it pretty good to get the boat out of the water.  Boat looked almost twice as big as the car when hooked to it.

The thing about that was I only had to go five miles from my house to the ramp and other than the ramp, there were no hills to worry about.

Yeah well the closest lake to us is about 30 miles and it's mostly flat highway driving.  I don't see a reason to burn up the tranny for that though.  We will just have to wait.

That's a gigantic red flag.

Maybe lying was the wrong word.  How about pulling her chain?

first you guys tell the guy his car wont be big enough, now demanding more pictures of his girl. this is not a good day for kevo. haha

World wide except North America CRV tows 1500 klg(3300 lbs) with brakes and 600 klg(1320 lbs) with out brakes. Most of the world can not afford huge gas guzzlers like we can, they pay over five dollars a gallon or more. Its all about marketing here in US.Be smart,be careful and enjoy.

dont worry man, my wife does the same thing. i like it though she does her research and makes educated decisions.

I would say no... don't be the guy who gets stuck in the loading dock thats a little to steep.  Dont be the guy who bends his uncarrage out either... seen both.  I saw someone trying to pull a fiberglass boat probably 2500ish pounds out of the ramp with a 2 door ford escourt.... wasn't pretty.

The main thing about pulling anything is HILLS.most of us on BR can pull a boat with a bicycle  .if you really want to pull your boat anywhere no matter what conditions and do it safe get a diesel

Just towed my 14 Semi V home (40 Miles) with my 2003 CRv and hills and braking were fine.  I have to agree that I do not know if I would go any more.

I used to tow a 18ft Triton with a 150hp motor with a S-10 it was great until you had to stop. I cannot imagine that a CRV weighs more than a S-10. That would be my concern.

I'm looking at an 01 Ford Explorer sport 4x4 with a 4.0 V6.  It says it has a towing capacity of 5000#.  I would imagine I could tow a decent size fish/ski with that?  Does anyone tow with an Explorer?

I did until recently.  As long as you keep your total weight under 3500lbs, you should be fine.  thats a pretty decent fish and ski

My thoughts exactly! My buddy chose to ignore his trucks tow capacity ratings and now he has a Silverado with no transmission!
