It depends on the colors.

white/clear water/cloudy

blue Gill/ clear water/ sunny

black/ stained water/sunny

blue/ slitely stained water/ sunny

A soft swimbait?  You gotta be careful with those- I'm pretty picky about what conditions I throw them in.  It has to be either sunny, cloudy, or raining or it's a waste of time.  

I use those things year round down here.  
For years they have been a permanent option In my home lake (Okeechobee)

 

Personally I use either RI Skinny Dipper or the Big EZ depending on how much “thump” they want.

I do remember a tournament where we were mid cold front, and it would flip flop from sunny and breezy to overcast and still about every half hour to 45 minutes.  The swimbait got bit well in the sunny conditions, while a spinnerbait was better behind the clouds.  It was more than just coincidence, but I think it was just that day.  I don't draw too much other than it's an interesting deal for the day.

Not necessarily conditional for me.   I used the Basstrix on KY Lake for years on ledges.  Sunny or Cloudy, big ones still ate em ?

I used to only throw them when a spinnerbait wasn't a good choice. You know, calm and sunny.  Now I'll use them in place of a skirted jig, swim jig, swim worm. They just seem to produce under a plethora of conditions.

BassTrix hollow body started this lure type and still has the great action and colors. The Owner Screw lock weight hooks work good. Select a 1” longer then advertised a 6” is 5” long. Year around lure.
