Shimano Curado 70 MGL vs. Daiwa Tatula SV 103

Featured Replies

Is this another case of Ford vs. Chevy pickups where they'll both do the typical things you buy a pickup for and there's really just subtle mostly aesthetic differences between the two? I already have a Tatula SV 103 and like it, would getting the Curado 70 MGL fill a different niche or be a case of redundancy just with a different logo on the side?

I have two of both reels. Both are fantastic, and great if you like small reels.

I use mine with 20 or 30lb braid for all sorts of things. They are great for 3/16-1/2oz baits.

They are somewhat similar.

Don't have the MGL, but I would think casting distance would be greater on that reel.  I've read the MGL spools handle light baits pretty good, too.  I have a Scorpion 70 (non-MGL).  Was a bit more finicky getting dialed in.

If you already have the Tatula, get the Curado.

I just wish I could get an sv reel that was as similar size as the curado 70 mgl without having to spend $500 on the steez ct sv. I love the size of my steez ct sv and the curado mgl. Please let me know if I'm missing an sv reel that is actually small. The new tatula is way wider and bigger than the curado 70 mgl or ct sv

I just got my oldest son a SLX MGL 70. I have a few Tatula SVs. I used the SLX a little bit on Saturday, and my initial thoughts are that if you are looking to bomb cast light baits, I would give it the nod over the SV. The spool really does spin up very quick like advertised and once I got it setup just right, I was able to bomb cast a weightless senko into wind without issues and like most Shimano reels, it gets pretty good distance.

On the other hand, I would give the Tatula SV the nod for pitching, skipping and target casting heavier baits.

Look at the reels in the post below yours

are you saying the new alphas is similar to the CT sv steez? My buddy has it and said the alpha was close to the same as the new zillion. It definitely looks longer than the CT sv

Throwing a curveball here, I ended up going with a nearly new 2020 Chronarch MGL for $200. Seems like a versatile workhorse and I'm sure it'll get the job done for me and be a big upgrade over my old Curado I :).

2020? I think they were released in 2016 or 2017 if memory serves me right.

You may be right, 2017 looks like but I believe it was purchased last year.

I don’t have Steez CT. Tatula Sv should be about the same size as SS SV (I assumed). The reason I bought both reel base on size and line capacity alone (replaced my bantam MGL/scorpion 1000XT).

Alphas Sv tw is much smaller than the new zillion.  It palms nearly identical to the steez ct.

Alphas SV TW or Alphas CT SV would be my vote as well. Great reels!
