Use of Dobyns Sierra 700SF

Featured Replies

I made an impulse purchase, the Sierra 700SF ultra finesse. I don’t know what else I can throw other a Ned rig on this rod. The Rod is rated 1/16 to 5/16, and a weight less senko with a hook weighs 3/8. How would you make better use of the rod?

On paper, that's the same as my 7'-02" River Runner. I use 4 lb. test mono and throw 1/8 to 1/4 oz. lures for steady retrieve.

I'd never use a rod that light for bottom contact where I fish.

In cold water, I've caught bass on small spoons pulling them in slow, just above the bottom. That rod would also be awesome with the Rapala Ultralight cranks and small spinners.

You just need to keep it away from junk and cover.                         jj

It will work well casting 1/16-1/8 oz hair jigs or small cranks like a 1/16 oz Lucky Craft Snacky in lakes and streams without significant cover.

I throw 1/10 oz Neds and found the 740 UF tip to be too soft and returned the rod for a Phenix Feather 7'1" Light.  It works better for Ned rigs IMO and even the above mentioned ultralight lures when paired with an Alphas Air TW reel. That reel is unbelievable with light lures, but now I feel like I have a much more versatile bass fishing rod.

If I fished streams for trout, I think the 700 would be a very good rod.

^ What Fry said plus...

3/32 Gammy off-set finesse jigs or 3/32 Owner shaky heads with Zoom finesse worms.

That's a couple things I'll be tossing on my Procyon L/F - which has about the same lure rating as the SA-700SF
