Tungsten bullet weights

Featured Replies

Tungsten, while being of smaller size in the heavier weights also will not blow open a basses mouth as much and will allow better hook ups.  At least that is the theory many subscribe to.  I also like the smaller size to come through cover a little better.

Absolutely, positively, tungsten is a much better choice than lead. The smaller size (not always necessary) and the sensitivity (always necessary) of tungsten is light years ahead of lead.

Fun fact - tungsten material is not much more expensive that lead. The reason it costs so much is that it is one of the, if not the hardest materials on earth. It needs 6000+ degrees F to melt where lead only needs 600+. It takes a tremendous amount of power, to make a tungsten weight.

Very cool info. I do know tungsten is next to diamond in hardness and more dense than lead. Its a very unique element.

One thing that has held me back was I did think it looked funny having a teeny little bullet weight paired with a big body craw. But as long as the bass don't care then I guess I shouldn't.

Next outing I plan to pick up a pack in 5/16 or 1/4 and give them a try and see what I think before buying tons of different weights of them.

Hmmm....interesting. By size, it should make for quicker hooksets. Never thought of that.

Less mass to move around? I'm guessing that is the science behind it.

Mass is the same - it's just more dense so the smaller profile of the tungsten doesn't have as much resistance...ergo, the bass' mouth isn't forced open as much by the weight hitting the front.

Yes, the smaller bullet sized profile will slip through their mouth easier when they are holding it closed. That is the first thing I heard about tungsten that would make me consider using it.
