MGX2 feeling Geary

Featured Replies

Brand new MGX2.   Took it out a few days ago and it lacked in casting.  Brakes off and it still got no distance and wouldn’t even bird nest.

took the bearings out today, flushed them.  Re-oiled them and wow does the spool really move now.

however I didn’t recall the reel feeling “Geary” but now that I’ve put it back together it feels “Geary”.  Oddly the reel feels smoother but has some noise to it.   I did take the side plate off to take a peak and it’s just dripping with grease and oil.   Closed it up without touching anything and planned to clean it later on.

any suggestions what would of changed and made the reel feel Geary/noisy now?  I’m hoping cleaning it all up and re-greasing it will fix something.

thanks

Try backing off on some of the side plate screws just a hair. Sometimes that extra pressure causes issues.

Thanks.  I’ll try that.

I’m not sure what I did.   But I decided to just strip the reel down to the frame.   Clean up everything good.    It was super oily and greasy from factory.    I re-assembled everything and re-greased and oiled everything and now it’s quiet and smoother than ever.   ??‍♂️.  Thanks for the replies everyone.   I just hope it stays this way now :)

Abu Garcia engineers all of their reels to retain the historic gear tooth feel in every reel. The more you fish it the faster it goes away.
