battery size

Featured Replies

Hey guys and girls I have a question for you.. I baught a 70# minnkota edge trolling motor to put on my 15.5 foot aluminum bass boat.. I am thinking that I would like to run 2 group 24 batteries to try keeping the weight down. My question is would the 24s be enough or would I be better off putting the heavier 27s?? I believe its only around 20 lbs more for the 27s but ive only got a 30 hp outboard and I wanna keep the weight down as much as possible..thanks in advance for the help

If you fish hard and where it is windy you better get the 27 series batteries.  Get the most reserve amps you can buy (180-200).

I would go with the 27 (or 31's if you're really on the TM all day).  You can bet that the day will come that you wish you had the extra reserve.

Culln5 is right ... so it takes a little longer to get to your spot. If your batteries die you can't stay there anyways. Go with the biggest you can afford and take your time getting there. It'll pay off at weigh in.

what does group 24, 27 etc. mean... sorry to derail but I never heard Batteries referred to that way... ;)

Battery Size Codes

Batteries come in all different sizes. Many have "group" sizes, which is based upon the physical size and terminal placement. It is NOT a measure of battery capacity. Typical BCI codes are group U1, 24, 27, and 31.

Group 24 = 70-85 Amp hours 12 volts

Group 27 = 85-105 Amp hours 12 volts

Group 31 = 95-125 Amp hours 12 volts
