Low lake levels have killed my wading, bank fishing in Minn.

Featured Replies

I will leave a pic at the end of this post showing my existing problem. Heres the deal, 2 of my best bass lakes for banking and wading have water levels here in detroit lakes minn. area so low that the fish have moved out.

Look at the pics, you see the lily pads? these pads go to either side for the diameter of this lake which i wade. These pads are like a wall, they go from pads to semi weedy 6-7 foot water out in front of them and the bass come out and ambush my lures as i am standing normally a 1/3 of the way into the water from shore and bomb cast out to the pads.

During a normal water level year i can only wade out a a 1/3 of the way to the pads and thats pushin it with chest waders. Well now i can easilly walk out right up to the pads and its about 3 feet deep where it used to be well over my head.

So i would say the bass have moved well back behind the pads to reach deeper water which i cant get to, i tried but the pads were gettin tangled in my feet, my lures were gettin hung up and the bottom is to squishy to risk stepping into a hole and drowning.

I gave up and got out of the water. I talked to a guy loading his boat out and he told me the water level has taken away his bass holes he had marked out on his electronics from previos years and he was looking for new spots but didnt do well at all finding many bass.

Wife and i packed up and went to another lake 15 minutes away and yes the water is extremely low but the pads are right up on shore and i can cast well out beyond them to deeper water and i caught bass and pike. The biggest bass was 3 lbs the others were smaller. They were finally chasing spinners again, a red and black with a mister twister reg size black grub for trailor and top water 130 blue white spook.

The pike were hittin today and they were short but muscled up and fought me all the way to shore gettin me hung in the weeds and draggin them out. My line is braid spiderwire 30lb with a clip to a 80 lb fluoro leader a foot long clipped to a lure.

Looks like you need a kayak!

Seriously though, the water levels are very low here too.  Some of the rivers are approaching all time-low.  I have recorded 0.5 inches of rain the entire month of June so far, and June is typically the wettest month of the year here with about 5 inches of rain.

Opposite for me here. My favorite bank fishing spot is so high there is no bank to walk right now its all the way up to the thick woods and no boats allowed here so kayak is no good.

where is here?

My favorite creek just went dry over the past several days. People are freaking out. Things are looking great here :( Few carp or bass swimming in circles in this puddle. This was full of running water just a few days before.
