So I’m looking to pick up a glide bait or two to start out with this winter. I’ve seen a lot about the Swaver and was thinking the 168 size (1 5/8oz).  I do not have any baitcasting setups heavier than a MH. I do however have a 7’ Heavy Fast action Shimano Teramar (rated for 1/2-2oz) with a 4000 Daiwa BG on it. The reel is a 5.7 geared reel with 40lb braid and is larger than most other 4000 size reels. On paper, I feel like it could work. I just cant say I’ve seen others use a spinning rod for this application so I was curious if I’m missing out on some big mechanical advantage or something. If I get into it I will definitely get a dedicated setup for this but wondering if this spin setup from my saltwater uses would get me by for this season.

I was throwing an s waver 168 on my MH rod, with 16 pound FC, earlier today.  It threw the lure fine.  As long as you don't whip the lure really hard, you should be good on the baitcaster.   

 

The spinning rod sounds like it will work, but the reel might be a little slow.  Give a try ?‍♂️

 

I throw a 168 Waver and several other swim/glide baits on a MH spinning rods and have the 4000 Daiwa BG as well (and other heavy spinning reels). The 4000 Daiwa BG is a beast of a reel and you're not handy-capped in any way with it, imho. Main thing is the stout rod and line with that set-up. In open water I use 30 pound braid to a 17 to 20 pound mono leader (blood knot, 9 wraps each way). Stump infested water I used straight braid. Anything bigger than a Waver I tie on onto a stout bait caster and longer heavy rod.... then the work begins.

Thanks for the replies. I may have overestimated the size of the 168. Think I’ll get one and try it out on both rods and go with whichever works best

I have the 168, and my personal preference would be to throw it on a baitcaster, only because to impart good action on the 168, it's the reel that does that.

Only a small turn of the reel will have the 168 moving side  to side, with no effort, but a smooth turn is imho the way to go, I don't know if you could, or would get that with a spinning reel, but there's 1 way to  find out.
