Can anyone tell what size the snaps are on the cross eye chatterbaits? They don't look the best and I want to switch them out for a better one.

I use these in 72lb for the jackhammer, and have a few on the crosseyes. 

P-line has a 65lb https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/P-Line_Crosslock_Snap/descpage-BBR.html that works too, but I think the shape of the Owner bend is closer to the orginal.

 

It is possible to install these without pliers, just keep working the angles and you'll see it. Once you do it is a few minutes at most. 

 

 

Why would you want to change? You will not lose a bass due to the snap. I have used every different chatterbait and I have been hung up on trees with 40 lb braid and you have a better chance of straightening a hook as opposed to the snap failing.

Have you used the Cross-eye version?  I have several and lost a couple on decent fish due to  snap failure. And I was using flouro, not braid. All I got back was the straightened out snap. I upgraded the snap and solved the problem. 

 

It's kinda odd since all the other versions of Chatterbait have stouter snaps and yet the weedless version, Cross eye, cheaped out on the snap.

Yea, I have used the original, project Z, cross eye and jackhammer. Never had a problem with the snaps. I'm not saying it can't happen, but it just seems like it would be an extreme case.

I always laugh at the guys that say they would never trust a snap but yet bait manufactures have been selling lures with them on forever. If in doubt just replace with an owner or another quality snap.

#2 Mustad Fastach.  Can be a pain to thread into the blade sometimes, but they're stronger and rip completely clean from grass.  There are snaps that are easier to deal with but they are more then double the cost. 

A #2 is going to fit most bladed jigs perfectly.

P-line's #2 fits just right. For some reason the owner #2 is comically giant. Still have no idea what I'm going to do with the packs of them sitting around.

My best guess is it is either quality control issues or impact/shock issues where they pop open vs a steady pull. It has unfortunately happened to me on a hookset with the crosseyes, and so all I'll ever have is a picture of the snap instead of a picture of what was surely a giant fish /wink.

 

The original chatterbait doesn't track well with the snap they use. 

I just bought a cross eyed chatterbait too, haven’t caught much with it yet but it seems like a great chatterbait. I need to switch snaps too because I was also shocked at the snap, very small and light wire for a chatterbait designed to be fished in heavy cover.

Are you they bad? I just ordered a bunch of those baits.  A video from zman states the snaps they use are more stout for use in cover.

Crosseyez chatterbaits are outstanding and I fish them at least as much as the Jackhammers now. They are better in weedy conditions like sparse stalks and way way better in wood.

 

But z-man is confused about the snaps. They don't do impact very well at all, so I just change them out. 

 

If you just look at the snap wire objectively, someone sold them a bill of goods - there's no way that is a 60lb snap. The wire is too small. Some yahoo at Decoy measured a gentle lift of a weight I guess? And a big swimbait forum has a good bit of negative commentary about the same line of snaps relative to other designs and manufacturers.

 

The good news is it takes no tools and less than two minutes to change out for the p-line or owner mentioned above, once you know how the tetris works. 

 

To be fair, I'm in Texas and fish chatterbaits on a H/mod-fast rod with heavy line (usually braid to 20lb leader) in nasty cover with a shot at really big fish, so it is less than ideal conditions for the factory snap. 70c and two minutes make me feel better anyway. 

 

I'm taking my changes on the Eagle Claw snap i got from Academy. The make up is very close to the snaps on the Jackhammer and Crosseyes. If it fails oh well. I still would rather take my chances with something like that over the stock junk that comes on the original chatterbait.
