trolling motor question

Featured Replies

I've got a question about my trolling motor, i tried searching the site, but didn't come accross what i was looking for. If anyone can point me in the right direction, thanks in advance.

I have a minn kota 12/24 trolling motor. It came on the old boat i got last year and the cables that connect the trolling motor and the battery were in really bad shape. So i replaced them with some new ones. It seems like there were three cables when i replaced them, but i only replaced the red and black. I used it all year last year and everything worked great. This past week i was looking around online and i came accross trolling motors so i got to reading up on them and the different voltages. When i got to reading i noticed it says you have to have 2 batteries for a 24V trolling motor. I only use one battery for my trolling motor, but the trolling motor doesn't work when its on the 12V switch, it only works on the 24V switch. Am i missunderstanding this or shouldn't the 24V switch take 2 batteries?

The 24V uses 2 batteries, if you have the motor hooked up to one battery your running 12V..sounds like you got some wires in the wrong place.

It's possible the 12v switch doesn't work. A 24v motor will work on 12v only not as well. I found this out last year when I has 1 battery not charging due to a blown fuse.
