Long rods vs. short rods for finesse spinning

As the sunnies keep coming closer I am doing vertical jigging sitting under a bridge piling. I can cast to other pilings & bring them all over.  As soon as the fly touches the water. It is like a hatchery feeding time. No hook is used then. They do hang on.   ?

I’ve always been a fan of rods in the 7’ range for most of my finesse stuff. A lot of my fishing is for Georgian Bay smallmouth ( aka tanks), in big open water, and I feel like I can handle them better with a longer rod.

This is interesting, thanks.  I am originally from northern Ontario and fish in eastern Ontario for smallmouths with my brother every year.  (I have lived in the US deep south for a long time).  Trying this 7-4 rod for the first time, I imagined it would be ideal for long casts of ned rigs and drop shots for some of those tanks you are talking about.  I was trying it out on our largemouth the other day and found I liked the feel for that.

I've moved to 7'5 and 7'6 rods for everything where i can. I really like the extra casting distance over the 7 foot and especially 6'6 rods.

I could see myself really benefiting from that.  I am a kayak fisherman and fish some long points and can use all the help with long casts in those conditions.

i like spinning rods over 7 ft. when I am making long casts with keitechs, ned rigs, hair jigs, tubes.

Thanks.  I see myself using this for similar applications.

Makes sense.  I see using similar baits.  I use a finesse Neko a fair amount.

I'm a medium length rod guy I guess. I really like the 6'9 to 6'10 range in rods. I mostly fish from smaller boats on small water so over 7 just feels cramped. This length also just feels right in my hand

Just picked up a Dobyns DC 743 SF as part of their Boom Boom series sell off.

It is a one-off length in the DC series.

Always used 7 ft ish spinning rods for finesse before this.

Tried it out today with ned heads and grubs and caught a few.  Good casting distance, accuracy maybe not as good.  Most of the time I am not aiming too close to a specific target with soft plastic finesse techniques.

Interested to hear who uses  spinning rods in the 7-4+ range and for what applications?

Mine 7'6" spinning and I have 8' Casting(Also I have 5'6" casting as well and 7" spinning). So two of mine over 7" and two shorter. It is all about the location you using them. If you cast in open area I would decently use longer than 7" but if you have trees and so many things around you, I would go shorter.

That makes sense as a key factor.  My conditions vary between those extremes.
