Help with lithium batteries...

Featured Replies

I'm looking at lithium trolling motor batteries the ones I'm looking at don't have cold to sensors dose this mean you can't charge them in freezing temps or can't use them in freezing temps ? I fish year round fished a tournament yesterday was 24 degress at take off.any advice would be great thanks

Look at the manufacturer's specs. Some LiFePo batteries are good down to zero - other's no colder that mid 20s for use. Most want to be above freezing for charging.

We could run around here stating our opinions - but really, the manufacturer is the last word.

You can damage them if you charge them in freezing temps.  The operating temperature is lower than the charging temp and is lower than I would want to fish in.  It’s usually around zero.   As already mentioned,  follow the manufacturer’s recommendations.

You can get heated lithium's, this is just one. Operating temp goes to -45F.

Looking over the docs - it uses the battery's own charge to run the heater. Colder it is, the more the heater has to work and the more current is drained.

I think it would be safe to charge while the internal heater is running - so long as your charger has automatic maintenance mode for LiFePo batteries...but I wouldn't want to store the battery off the charger with the heater connected and running.

I think heated batteries are primarily used for applications like solar power were the batteries might be charged daily in a cold environment.  Battle Born batteries can be used down to -4F.  Do you really want to be out on a Kayak when the temp is below -4?  If you need to charge your batteries and it’s not gonna be above freezing for several day then remove them and charge them in a warm place.  They’re not as heavy as regular batteries.

The BMS in any good lithium battery will not allow it to charge below freezing temps.  For my lithium batteries when I asked the manufacturer about cold weather use he said that was not a concern, only charging and the BMS would not allow it to damage itself. Right now I checked mine on the app and they are at 57 degrees in my garage :)

Keep in mind, there's two types of lithium batteries commonly in use today, and they're very different in how they work.  Lithium ion, like in your phone, don't like to work below about 20° F (though that can vary).  And they don't like to be charged when below freezing.  They also don't like to be ran above 120°F.  They tend to be lighter and more powerful than the other type of lithium battery, and they tend to put out too much voltage for many marine electronics, like trolling motors.

Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePo4) batteries, the kind you're mostly likely to find in marine, deep-cycle battery, usually can be ran from around 0°F-140°F (again it can vary).  They also don't like to be charged below freezing.  But neither do lead acid.  So pretty much any battery you have, you need to bring it inside to charge it if it's below freezing.

BankC has the temps correct...converting that label to Fahrenheit -

Charging temp: 32f to 122f

Usage temp: -4f to 140f

Honest I am not affiliated with this guy but I watch a lot of his videos. Fourth time I've recommended him recently.

DIY Solar Power with Will Prowse - YouTube

He tears these batteries apart. Don't assume your expensive battery is better and don't expect it to have cold weather charging protection in the BMS. This guy insists on it but many of us don't need it.

He's largely into solar. For me I'd never charge a trolling battery outside, let alone in freezing weather.

He has tested a lot of the sub-$400 batteries (100ah) from Amazon. Many are very good. When he recommends one they sell out.

He tears them apart and looks for himself and tests them too. Great channel.

In the fwiw department... I just bought one of the low end Lithium's for my TM. After rx'ing it I got a note from the vendor telling me I'd get a $20 Amazon gift cert if I did an Amazon review and emailed a screen shot of it to them, which I did. Gave it 4 stars as I got it quick, undamaged, looks good, and bench checks ok. A day later I got another email from the vendor, I'll get another $10 if I change it to 5 stars.

Sheesh!

They are going to have a long wait, don't expect ice out for at least a month.
