New rod/reel

Featured Replies

Looking to set up a new rod/reel, would like to use for cranking and spinnerbaits, things of that nature.  Reel will either be a Tatula CT or Elite, and rod a Dobyns Fury 703 or 705CB.  Any input as to the better combo here for intended uses?  I don’t get a ton of time to fish, nor have a big budget for several rigs.  Idea being less time tying more time fishing.  I realize it may not be the most ideal combo for certain things, but would like it to be good all around.  I currently have a 704 paired with SV TW 103 that I am using for plastics and such.

I have a Tatula on a 705CB and it is a great crankbait rig. It’s also good with jerkbaits. I’m not overly fond of it for spinnerbaits. Especially with trailers. It’s rated for 1/4-1 oz, but it’s a little whippy with anything over 1/2 oz IMO.

Having said that, I tried it with weightless Texas rigs with Fat IKA’s and Neko Machos with a 3/0 EWG and was surprised how well the hooksets were.

I have the Fuego CT (Tatula CT minus the T-Wing) on a 705CB. Great crank rig, but I prefer spinners on a Fast action.

The spool on the Elite bombs lures. I believe they call it the long cast spool. The Tatula CT is more suited for bottom contact. As for the rods. I personally prefer the 733C for spinnerbaits and finesse jigs. I have really taken a liking to the Champion XP 685cb. I fish ponds and it throws finesse squarebills, squarebills, perfect. As for all around rod the 703 is going to be a great moving bait rod. Although I am a firm believer in that extra 3 inches. The 3 power is a wonderful spinnerbait rod, I can't stress it enough. I feel like if you want to simplify your life and fish many different moving baits (spinnerbait, chatterbait, squarebill, lipless, maybe a buzzbait, you'll love the 3 power. Chatterbaits, you might want the 734 or 704. I like a softer tip...the Sierra series is just about as good as it gets.  The Champion XP will be a little faster, the Sierra is softer which helps the vibration for moving baits.

If you just want a cranking rod, the 705cb is your rod. The power for all purpose moving baits.

For now I’d like more of an all around, maybe add another one later on if I get to using it more and more.  I’ll probably go with the 703 for my moving baits and continue using the 704 for my plastics.  Maybe add a 735CB next year.  Still undecided on the reel as of yet.  I’m nowhere near anything of a good fisherman, just getting back into it after a 10 year hiatus

Is another 704 a bad choice for moving baits?  What difference would I notice between the 703/704 for moving baits?  Lets gear it more toward spinnerbaits/buzzbaits/other moving baits and say i'll get a 705CB at a later date to handle cranking duties.  Fishing yesterday with an older M/Fast rod (Shimano Convergence), I did not like necessarily like that the rod seemed bent over alot while using spinnerbaits and crankbaits on it.

For spinners/chatters/etc, I would definitely go with the 704. Despite it labeled 'Heavy', it's more a Medium-Heavy rod...more suited for the moving baits.

My 703 is for Jerks, wacky, etc. I'm currently running an Aird-X MH/F for moving baits, but once I have the money it'll be replaced with a 704.

Currently using the 704 for the plastics/jigs.  I have fished wacky before, however its not my most used, so the 704 will have to work for that as well, or i'll use a spinning outfit on one of my older rods.  this is already getting out of hand, in a matter of 2 weeks i've gone from 1 new setup to 3!

I may even give the 734 a shot

If you’re looking for a nice, all around rod, take a look at a Falcon Lowrider All-‘Round Fast MH/F. It’s a great rod.

I had the same thing happen to me this past winter when I decided I wanted to get into fly fishing.  The Bait Monkey is one mean dude.  :badlanguage:

Get the Eite for sure.  Shop around though.  No need to pay $250 for one.

I have been, that seems to be the going rate.  Anywhere specific to look?

I see them for $176 on the chinease Amazon place.  If you are going to spend $250 then get a JDM Zillon 1000 for around $280 shipped.  Neither reel at these prices will have a US warranty but the cost savings make it worth while.

Tough to find a rod that will do equally well with both.  If you plan to keep spinner baits to 1/2 and below, Falcon Bucco SR "Trap Caster" comes to mind.

Very light, balanced, sensitive rod for the $ and aa good tip for those duties.  $109 just about everywhere.  Only gripe is the foam grips, but that is all preference.
