12vt vS. 17vt or 24volt batteries

Featured Replies

I’ll be running a Garmin 93sv with panoptics and a Lowrance Carbon 12.
What can you tell me based on your experiences,  does the higher voltage make any difference on your finders or black box/panoptics transducer?

I appreciate reply’s

For one - the rated voltages on those two units are...

Garmin - 9v-18v

Lowrance - 12v

Exceeding the specified voltage can damage your unit - and warranty doesn't cover 'misuse'.

I spoke to Garmin and Lowrance.

Also looked online at the ratings for both.

When you have time look into the subject further.
Hence, the reason for my thread.

Remember...........Any voltage higher than is NEEDED ?  Is ALWAYS converted to HEAT. And a complete waste of battery running time Power.  I redesigned electronic & electrical equipment.  Go too high above RATED voltages ?  The units will die a early death.

Buy a 12 volt battery. Then you can use it to jump start the main motor if that battery shorts out and dies.  Been there. Why I have 20' jumper cables to give or receive a start with another boat.

The ratings I posted were direct from the online manuals.

At one time, I was running Livescope off of a 24v setup just to see if there was a difference as a couple of years ago, it was all the rage online about voltage as LS operates at a wide range of voltages.

I will shamefully admit, I did see some improvement at the higher voltage but I quickly realized that the house battery I was running the LS off of originally, just couldn’t handle the load.  I ended up separating LS to its own 12v battery and viola, the 12v image was just as good as the 24v image.

The point, if you are supplying adequate amperage, you will not see a difference with any voltage.
