Hunting chatterbaits and trailers

Featured Replies

Is there any combination of trailer and chatterbait that causes hunting?  My fogy charterbaits will hunt with a kvd soft jerk on them but won't with a gogan rage craw as a trailer.  It seems like the trailer is part of the equation.  I've also heard of guys rigging a boot tail as a trailer with an emphasis on rigging it upside down.  No explanation as to why though.   What combinations of chatterbait and trailer have gotten that erratic hunting action for you?

I haven't experimented much, but found the hog farmer spunk shad to be my favorite.  I have the 6.5" and bite 3/4" off.  Almost all of by bladed jig success is night fishing.  Zako, swimmon, and super fluke have also produced for me.  The swimmon being the 2nd best "hunt" in my opinion.

If you like Fogys, also get some tremors.  They are the best hunting I've seen so far (haven't tried a jackhammer).  All of the trailers I use on them hunt (zako, rage menace, blade minnow) but it is speed dependent.  A quick turn of the reel will start it hunting (or a rod sweep).

Fogy with a Jenko tremor shad.  Any subtle increase in speed sends it hunting.

This recent recover that I posted to the found lure thread.  Color has faded and something nipped the tail.

Hog farmer Spunk shad, but only at a faster retrieve.

I found that the 3/4oz jackhammer hunts like crazy with a 4.5 or 5.5 spunk shad. Can't remember off the top of my head which size I use on it.

I like the Googan clickbait with a Zoom super fluke on the back. Caught a 5 last night with this combination.

I found that a slender bait such as a fluke will hunt much better than a craw with 2 arms flapping. I think that the arms in the back will cause drag that reduces the hunting action.

This was my thought as well.  Seems to line up with my observations too.  To plug some forum sponsors, the 3/8 oz fogy and caffeine shad pairing work well.  Hunts and spirals on the fall.
