topwater bites in Very deep water.

one of my local lakes is an old quarry.  just a big swimming pool.  it is 50 feet deep darn near everywhere.  the edges appear to be some what terraced.  I should google historic pictures or something.

but this time of year, it can happen anytime.  you look across the lake and you see splashes of rising bass way out in the middle.  it comes and goes, and can appear anywhere.  when it does, it is pandemonium.  I will crank top speed in my kayak and race out there and cast out a popper on my approach.  I usually pull one fish before they go away.  once I got two.  you just unhook the fish as fast as you can, and cast again.  I usually dont even boat the first fish.  just reach down with pliers and let it go.

I saw this happening in 120 feet of water once, but I was too slow and didn't have a topwater at the ready.  I assume the bass are just herding shad?

bass work in teams?

A Spook or any big walking bait will draw some hard strikes over deep water.

Instead of throwing a topwater throw a spoon.  It's my belief that the big, lazy fish sometimes hang around under the frenzy and gorge on injured baitfish from the frenzy.   There were a couple lakes, 40+ years ago that had a good population of white bass.  They'd be tearing up shad.  My Dad would throw something topwater out and catch white bass, or small largemouth.  I'd throw out a spoon and catch hogs.

Yes, bass will herd up the shad or herring like tuna do ocean bait. Get them to the surface and start busting.

I fish a very deep quarry and often use a buzzbait sun rise and sun set times with good success.
