Can anybody share their experiences with using a fishfinder from shore, Hummingbird makes a couple of models that sound really interesting?

    Used the HB Smartcast FF, and I agree with MattinOK about the low quality image.  Plus, it's another rod/reel combo that you have to lug around, which is not practical for run-n-gun bassing.  More of a gimmick if you ask me.

    Buy a quality map or google sattelite the body of water.

    Listen to these guys...I was trying to find one a few years ago and still looking.There really doesn't seem to be one out there yet.

    I suspect if you do find a good one it's going to cost you some good money.
