Matching trailer to skirt?

Featured Replies

A question for those more experienced jig fishermen: How important is it to match the trailer to the skirt? I've recently started having some luck with jigs to the point that it's the first lure I tie on every time I go out. I've matched the trailer to the skirt in the belief that it's key to getting fish to bite but on my last outing I ran out of blue/black craw trailers and had recently gotten my only green/red jig snagged and lost so I used a green pumpkin w/red flake Flappin' Hog on a blue/black jig and had as many, if not more, bites as when I've done a better job of matching colors. I may have answered my own question but I'll still take any input I can get from those in the know.

The next bass I catch on a matching jig-&-trailer will be one of my first.

Whenever I'm given the opportunity, I always use a dark color and light color on the same lure.

Your lure may pass through a range of different lighting conditions, during the same retrieve.

I prefer to use different colors.

Black skirt, I use a blue trailer, blue skirt I use a black trailer.

Green skirt I use a lighter green trailer.

Just experiment, I've caught fish both ways. I'm still new to throwing jigs, but having tons of fun just experimenting.

I frequently use a green pumpkin trailer on a black/blue jig. Don't know why but that combo catches me a bunch of fish.....

I normally have a little unwritten guide I go by when I'm fishing jigs.

Black skirt- Black neon or black/red trailer

Black/Blue skirt- Cinnamon purple, Blue Fleck, or Black trailer

Brown Skirt- Red trailer

Green skirt- Orange trailer

White skirt- White trailer

I also use hula grubs as trailers 75% of the time because I like the added action, bulk, and flash they give my jig.

This is the man to listen to!

Texan, I'm going to try some of your color schemes, I've come up with a few of my own that work, but some of those I haven't tried yet. Thanks again bud!

It's amazing the combo's that will work.

the rule of thumb to match them is excellent, but don't be afraid to experiment.

I have used chartreuse with purple and caught bass on it.

the only rule I have is to never mix plaids with prints (they clash)
