Cutting a TM shaft

Any of you guys ever cut down a TM shaft?  I'm getting tired of having the bow mount on my Jon sticking way the heck up in the air.  It's just getting in the way.  It's an older Motorguide Pro Series 4300.  Not under warranty, it was bought a while back off of craigslist.  I'm just curious before I try to take it apart and start cutting away if theres anything I really need to worry about.

i would imagine that the cords would be hard to cut around and when you cut the length where will that wire go that was in that section of shaft?

Search for a schematic on line.  Dtake the motor apart. Cut the shaft, shorten the wires then reassemble.  Not to hard to do with an older motor.  May be more of a problem if it has a built in transducer, otherwise not too hard to do, Just don't cut the wires when you cut the shaft, just rotate and cut don't go staright thru the shaft.

Good Luck,

Tom

I did on my transom mount Minn Kota.  All we had to do was remove the head, cut the shaft, and figured a way to route the wire in the head without having to cut it because of the extra length.

I cut one using a pipe cutting tool. Never got into the wiring. Did not have to shorten the wires just pushed them into the shaft. It was no problem especially since you can control the cutting pressure with the tool.

Well, I guess I'll have to take it apart and see how it goes.  Seems a few people have at least done it without issues.  Appreciate it.

+1 on the pipe-cutting tool.  I cut 8 inches off my Power Drive shaft using the tool and never touched the wires.  Once done I drilled a new holed for the head screw and reassembled.  It was much easer than I thought it would be.

If you cut the shaft, make sure you cut it on the head end, not the motor end.

Mark it and drill the mount hole before you cut the shaft. It's easier that way. Don't ask me why I know that. LOL.
