Big swimbaits on 150 size baitcaster

Featured Replies

Do you think a SLX DC 150 can handle throwing 2-3 oz glidebaits or swimbaits or would that be overkill

I did it for a couple months w/ a curado dc 150 and a fury 795SWBT and caught fish.  It felt like it was too much for the reel.  When I could, I went up to a curado 300 and everything about it is better now.  I don't recommend.

Honestly, I think it can handle it, but a 200+ size is better. I've used everything from a Citica 200D, Kastking Spartacus and Ardent Magnum to an Okuma Citrix 364 and caught a bunch of fish on them with baits to 5oz.

I actually have a Kastking Spartacus Maximus I would unload cheap if someone wanted it for this purpose.

Any bait over 2 oz. I go to a size 300 reel. A 200 just feels a tad weak when t comes to tossing that size of a bait.

I find 150s awkward for baits that size and you're pushing line capacity with heavy line which will shorten casting distance and impact retrieve speed. I like a 200-300. Swimbait rods are tip heavy anyway, so a small, light reel isn't the best choice here.
