Spinner bait

Featured Replies

I've used the Red Fish Magic with a Zoom Fat Albert grub or a small swim bait for years and caught a lot of fish on it but doesn't play well around wood.

I just remembered this morning that my fishing partner on Badin once told me that he liked to use a single spin colorado with no skirt, swimbait substituted, as a wake bait when the fish would not eat a buzzbait during times he suspected that there should be a topwater bite. He said if they would not eat the buzzbait, they would eat that. I fashioned up a spinnerbait this morning with two small deep cup colorado's that will spin tighter and faster to the frame and removed the skirt and added swimbait like the guy said.

Later into the season, if I catch some nice fish on this spinner, I'll be sure to share.

That's pretty cool, I bet it works. As far as buzzbaits go, I have one, but never throw it. As there's no way any fish out here is going to eat that thing. I only have access to extremely pressured small public ponds or lakes. I'm talking about bluegill won't hit or at least are very wary of nightcrawlers even. This is one of the reasons I enjoy saltwater kayak fishing, I still have to finesse them even in saltwater but the fish are more aggressive, I can typically get bit if I get off shore throwing skirted jigs tipped with bait.

That being said I have caught fish on a whopper plopper and some blowups on toads. I believe zman made a micro buzzbait that looks pretty cool and worth a shot.

I'm really tempted to try a spinnerbait the next time I get out on a charter and use that in place of surface iron. Problem is I'll need one big heavy and sturdy enough. Been looking at some musky/pike spinnerbaits. The bucktail ones are pretty sick

I have had good luck with bucktail in saltwater

Yes I keep hearing about those. I know paddle tails with a underspin are supposed to be really good in saltwater. I figure how much different is a spinnerbait. Blades on top instead of bottom
