I have 4-7:5:1 reels and 3-6:8:1 reels and soon to be a 6:2:1 reel. I plan to redo my rod set ups and want to pair them up with the right rod and reel set up. My smallest rod is 7ft and my longest is 7ft 6in heavy rod which is my jig rod and a 7ft 4in heavy frog rod. 4 7 footers medium heavy and 1 7ft 2in rod medium heavy, so with that information, what type of lures should I rig my rods with??? I hope this all makes sense and all input is appreciated and God bless. 

There’s no mechanical advantage in any of those ratios over the others. They’re all so close it doesn’t really matter.  I’d just swap them around and see  if you find any preferences.

Think line retrevial rate, inches per turn, IPT. Moving baits are generally a slower retrieve, bottom baits are generally faster retrieve. 

 

Gear ratio is a sort of misnomer. Same as line rating by lb test, using diameter is a more accurate judgement of the line. Same as rod power, no industry standard of what a MH power really is. Same as rod action and about 100 other things fishing related. 

 

Fishing a sport made complex by marketing terms and we have all fallen for it at some point. It takes time and experience with different equipment to really get a feel for what works best for you.

Agreed. I like a faster retrieve on soft plastics especially to reel in the slack quickly. I’d hate to fish squarebills and other crankbaits with that fast of a retrieve.
