For those of you who have cooler livewells, what size coolers are you using? I was thinking a 100 QRT. would be perfect, am I correct?

Hookingem I'm not sure what size be best but I'm looking into the truck box at Walmart. Seem's very sturdy an possibly cheaper than a cooler. I think the one I'm looking 50 to 60 quart range for $60 I think. They have a larger size as well. But if you find some good prices If can PM me about it cause I'll be going to same route as you.

I was thinking about doing the same thing for my jon boat. You mentioned a truck box from walmart? Would that work? And what type of cooler would you need that would exceed 60$?

Let me make a suggestions. On my buddies 9.9 boat we use a cooler for a livewell. Honestly the cooler doesn't have to be huge but it needs very good locks. On one of our older ones it simply has your good tight rubber seal. Those seales aren't enought to keep shut when a good 3 pound fish wants out. My suggestion is the one gander mountain carries that has the compartment that opens on the lid so your not opening the entire lid. You just open a 10x10 section that you can drop your fish in. Those Igloo coolers are nice. I do like that compartment lid.

dhami013- I want to say the truck box should and could work. When I looked at it, it's very sturdy plastic with latches I think. I don.t recall any drill holes either in the bottom of it. If can find a cooler cheaper go for it but if not it might be an option.

put padding on the roof of the cooler so if the fish hits it hard then it wont injure it,  my boat livewells both have this padding in them and there are dents in it from where fish hit it pretty hard.

Are those truck boxes insulated?

Don't forget the weight you are adding to your boat.100 qt. =25 gal x8.34#H20/gal=208.5#. That is like another person.

Keeping the water cool is critical to keep the fish alive. The lack of insulation plus the metal would allow it to get too hot IMO. Styrofoam still won't give you the insulation qualities you'd need.

Not really just size and price wise. I went there last night and they had a the truck box for $44 and it's a 50 gallon. But I might just go the cooler route also just cause I wouldn't know the first thing about insulating them.

I thought no one would bring up the Walmart special.  My cooler that Simp is talking about is a $35 cooler.  It holds 5 bass (over 16 inches) no problem.  I suggest keeping a bungee cord handy to keep the lid closed.  You don't need anything too huge or fancy to keep fish alive.  Just make sure you have a solid aerator.
