Speedometer wont work.

Featured Replies

Good afternoon,

I bougth a Bass Tracker Pro Team 175 TXW 2007 with a Mercury 60HP EFI 4 Stroke.

The problem is the Speedometer stay in 0MPH all the time.

The owner told me that is because have dirt inside of a little hole in the motor. I cleaned as he told me and nothing.

Some one have any idea what i can do befor go to a repair shop ?

Speedometers on boats go out all the time. I gave up on mine. The GPS tells me how fast I'm going.

The speedometer is nothing more than a pressure gauge.  Water enters the passage at the front edge of the lower unit.  It's a hole about 1/16th inch in diameter, maybe a bit bigger.  There is a passageway in the motor which connects to a tube which leads to your speedometer.

Anything can plug that hole.  To clean it, get a drill bit that is slightly smaller than the hole.  Then using only your fingers, gently push the drill bit into the hole, twisting it with your fingers at the same time.

Make sure you twist it the correct way.  Twisting it the wrong way may work debris deeper into the hole.  Twisting it the correct way, the drill becomes a small augur, trying to bring the debris out of the hole.

If that doesn't work, a mechanic is your next step.

Put a new one in it, let it sit through another winter and it probably will not work again. Usually what happens, water gets into the pressure chamber and during the winter it freezes and pops the chamber. That or the pointer seperates does not move.

They are basically worthless anyway. Very, and I mean VERY seldom are they even close to being accurate. If I need room for anything in the dash, the speedo is the first thing to go and I would never spend the money to make it work.

Buy a GPS, they work accurately.

To check it, take the platic tube off the back of the speedo that goes to the pickup in the the motor. Using compressed air, blow through that tube and see air comes out of the hole in pitot. Since your motor has the pitot built in, you still should have air coming out the hole in the leading edge of the LU.

Next, apply compressed air to the fitting on the back of the speedo and see if it registers a speed. I think it takes about 80 psi to show about 40 mph.

Pull the hose off the connector behind the guage. Blow through it. If there is any resistance, something is clogged somewhere. See if you can blow it out from the guage side. If not, try to snake a small wire in the hole at the motor. Make sure the end of the wire is blunt so you don't punture the hose. Try blowing from the guage side again. My guage is always within 1 mph of my Humminbirds Speedo, unless the lower unit is covered in weeds. If all else fails, GPS will not let you down.

Find the tube where it comes out in the motor there should be a connector you can pull apart. If you have an air compressor you can blow air in the tube and blow out what is in it.You may have to pull some stuff out and keep blowing air in it to get it all out.
