Lure colors for blue stained water?

Featured Replies

My mother in laws farm pond developed a summer scum on top and they poured some type of blue algae/scum killer in it that will turn the entire pond blue.  What lure colors would you guys be looking to throw?  Thanks.

Same colors as not blue water probably.

Color is probably the single least important factor when selecting a bait.

Try to think more about depth of the water, the type of cover you'll be fishing, the mood and personality of the fish and then lastly what are they feeding on?

Take some time to observe your water.  Wake up early and walk the bank without a pole and just observe.

Do you see bass eating?  Bugs on the surface?  Chasing bluegill around? Busting on little schools?

Things like this can clue you in on what types of things will work.

All of this being said, you can't go wrong with Green Pumpkin, black and blue or white in most bodies of water!

Good luck and let us know what worked for you!

If the water is that bright blue/blue-green color, that is copper sulfate which is used as a weed killer.  That's another chemical I've found to put the fish off (see the other thread on here about green water/algae water).  Dark colors are going to give the best profile in it.  I'd have black and/or black/blue/purple or whatever your combo preference is.  If its sunny then some chrome based stuff.  chartreuse/white also shows up decently.

When they use to treat a local city park pond with that blue stuff, I found that Grape, or any purple type roboworm worked really well.

Same for some of my ponds. Ours our blue but a very clear blue…find green pumpkin is a solid choice.

Black is always a good choice.

An added comment, the blue stuff that was put in the pond did not turn the water blue but actually turned it a little deeper green color.  Yesterday in the middle of the day with 85 degree air temps I used a black Zoom Magnum Trick Worm rigged wacky style and caught 10.
