Wire hooks

Featured Replies

I was fishing some football jigs and had some great hits but poor hooksets. I noticed that the jigs were made with some wire hook that just kept straightning out!! Every fish just gave this football jig a beat down !!! I know that these wire hooks stink....what's your opinion on wire hooks? :-/ :-/

Welcome aboard!

Take a little time an look around. We have set up a number of specific sections for various topics.

All hooks are really made from wire, I suspect you are referring to what is called "light wire" hooks and yes these can be a problem, depending on where you are fishing.  On the other hand, they can come in handy if you are fishing in lots of laydowns and brush piles.  Use heavy line and pull them out if you can and then re-set the hook with a good pair or needle nose.  You really don't have to pull as hard on the hook set with these and if you are straightening them out on the hookset, ease back a bit.

Since I am only able to fish rocks and brush piles I went to the light wire hooks several years ago so I could get a few back.  I rarely have fish straighten them out but brush and rocks sure do.  That is why I keep pliers and a hook sharpener handy all the time.

99% of my single hook fishing is with an Owner light wire hook.  I can get a good hookset with slack line with these hooks and they are always sharp.  I have caught fish up to 30lbs(Striper, Lake Cumberland) without any problem.  With proper drag setting premium light wire hooks will land any bass you are likely to hook.
