My New Rod...What reel?

Featured Replies

Bought my First st.croix rod today, got a 6'6 Premier Med Power, fast action rod...the rod seems really stiff and i like it, i mainly bought it for cranking and spinnerbaits, but i think i might beable to use it to t-rig some senkos and worms..

Im thinking on buying a Simano Citica for my first bc reel, ive been hearing about it a lot lately and it also has a left hand retrieve which is what i wnated. Anyone have or use this reel? And is this a good reel for my first?.to learn to cast with etc?

Thanks to RoadWarrior ill probably string it with yo-zuri hybrid this spring, but use a cheaper line to learn with since i will probably backlash a lot!  ;)

Roadwarrior: what type of baits would you specifically fish with this outfit mentioned above?..you seem to know your stuff  ;D

Mike-

That is a very good rod, and very versitile.  You can fish most anything on it because it has good sensitivity for plastics, but it has enough backbone for any type of lure.  About the only thing you would be limited with that rod is fishing jigs in heavy cover, c-rigs in deep water, or fishing topwater frogs with it.  I think you will be fine to fish spinners, light cranks, plastics, etc.

I don't currently own a citica, but I have been hearing enough good stuff about them that I am considering looking into them to upgrade my reels.

Mike,

That sounds like a great rod! You can fish everything with your new equipment, but I think you will find it especially nice for soft plastics, medium weight jigs and spinnerbaits. It will work just fine for treble hook lures, but at some point down the line, you will want a "modertate action" or a softer tip rod for crankbaits, jerkbaits and topwater.

Congratulations!

I have two citica reels... you would do VERY well with getting one of those... I really like mine...

sweet rod... make sure to post pictures of the fish you whack with it ;)

Thanks guys, im getting my citica today, i sohuld have a lot of fun with it!, hopefully ill catch some nice fish to post ;)

Well your going to love that rod. But I use a fast tiped rod for every thing but crankbaits. But like to told you the other night about finding the right match. It took me 5 minnutes of riping a jerkbait on a soft tiped rod to find I like a stiff rod. The same gos with topwater plugs. When I jerk a topwater plug or a jerkbait it fells like I lose contach with it. But to learn with bait casters go and pick up some cheap braid.
