Matching Underspin to Swimbaits

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

Ill be doing a lot of underspin and Keitech Fat Swim bait fishing this year.

last year, I mostly used the 1/8 and 3/16 size Underspins with 2.8” Keitechs.

I want to expand those to lager sizes this year.

I’ve got this chart below that shows the Coolbaits underspin sizes.

I just don’t know which size Keitechs fit best on which size underspin. I’m looking at using the 3.3 through 4.8 size keitechs.

Any help on what sizes you would fit on which size underspin would be of great help thanks!

@Otter17 You could also consider a weighted hook underspin, like an Owner Flashy Swimmer or equivalent. If the factory weight is not heavy enough, tungsten putty or lead wire can be added quite easily & diameter of swimbait is typically not an issue & rig is weedless.

You could also T-rig a swimbait & peg the weight at the nose for same effect as a jig head minus the exposed hook, simple & tackle serves more purposes than a jig head might.

For my SB jig heads, I like Picasso Smart Mouth (without underspin) with light enough weight options for A-rigs & a bevy of hook sizes without going too small plus your choice of Mustad or Gamakatsu hooks. A bit on the pricier side. Picasso also sells a separate underspin harness to slide onto most jig heads keeper area with hooks over 3/0: https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Picasso_Single_Barrel_Underspin_Harness_Modified_2pk/descpage-PSBUSHM.html

Use the non-modified version for hooks smaller than 2/0.

I love the coolbaits underspin with a 2.8, but for 3.3's I prefer using the Dirty Jigs Tactical Bassin underspin. Anything bigger than that I usually use a flashy swimmer like Ripz mentioned.

Thanks guys. Great info and suggestions. Great minds think alike. I had just purchased some Flashy swimmers the other day. And am now liking those Picasso’s.

I use the Gambler Duz It.
They come with either a nickel or gold willow blade, assorted keel weights and sizes up to a 7/0.

The thing about them is that the blades are not fixed into position so you can move it for changing depths.

Length doesn’t matter as much as diameter . Use a bait that has a thin enough body so the blade has room to spin.

Also, you can always slip your hook inside the body of the bait a little lower so the blade has more room to spin

I fish a 1/0 for 2.8-3.3" swimbaits and a 3/0 for 3.8-4.3".

I don't fish bigger than that enough to have a knowledgeable opinion about it.

Thanks much man, this was actually the type of answer I was looking for. What size swim baits do you guys fit on what size underspin hooks. This helps a lot!
