Ok I gotta know before shelling out the extra money....If Berkley Vanish LINE and Berkley Vanish LEADER (20lb) both claim to be 100% fluorocarbon...how is it that the leader material is sooo much more expensive? At Cabelas the leader materials lists for $7.49 for 40 yards and only $9.99 for 250 yards of the line.

What's the story here? Same product different packaging? Is the leader material really different from the line and if both claim to be 100% fluorocarbon how can that be so???

Anyone with thoughts or experience?

Not sure the difference. I see the same thing with P-Line.

I have use Berkley Vanish in the past and do not like it. Thats just me

I used leaders alot. On rods that I have braid spooled up I always use a leader. I never tie braid directly to the lure. The 2 lines I have been using with no problems would be P-Line Floroclear and in heaver condition where there is a lot of abrasions I use Yo-zuri Hybrid. Both of these line are not 100% fluorocarbon line. They are a "fluorocarbon Polymer" other words its fluorocarbon coated  

Both lines are great infact I use P-line floroclear on most of my reels as main line.

I had the same question a few months back, and if I remember correctly from the answer that I was given, the difference is stiffness.  The leader material is much stiffer than the line is, even though they are the same # test.  I don't know for sure if this is true, but given the difference in price and quantity, if I use a leader I just use the fishing line version, not the leader material.

Both may be pure fluorcarbon but like in everything, there are different materials used for different purposes that have different characteristics, leader material is stiffer, tougher, streches less and is more resistant to abrassion than main line material -----> different price. Same thing applies to nylon leader vs nylon main line.

When I used to fish for stripers off Sandy Hook, NJ, I used 20-lb tackle with a 30-lb leader.

Being a fishaholic, I bought an entire tube of 30-lb x 40" Long Straight Leader Material.

Although it was pure nylon it behaved more like stiff wire, compared to 30-lb monofilament fishing line.
