I was just curious. We have bait casting reels, spinning reels and spin cast reels. Do you think that with all the other advancements in technology concerning our fishing world there could ever be a new type of delivery for our line? Maybe some hybrid reel or something along those lines?

Perhaps an underhand (ie spinning reel) that has a perpendicular mounted spool ( like a casting reel) would eliminate line twist. There would likely have to be some serious advancements along the lines of Shimano's DC technology, since you would have no way to "thumb" the spool.

There will always be someone trying to build a better mouse trap.

Rod or reels. Some might work some don't. Some might just not be what the fishing public want.

All we can do is wait and see.

Remember back a few years, In the 90's cabela's was selling their rods that had no eyes. The line ran down the inside of the rod. I would see them advertived all the time in their catalog, But I never knew anybody that used or tried them.

A huge imporvement would be a spinning reel that doesn't twist line.  Right now this is impossible because the line has to turn 90 degrees to respool.  I can't imagine it, but some briliant engineering type may come up with a workable design to eliminate this annoying problem.

You are right Avid. Just the tech of the roller bearing on the bail was a vast improvement. Remember how it was before they came out? I am sure some bright young mind will come up with something. I hate that sound of a loop going through a guide from time to time.

I believe we'll be seeing more and more reels made with lighter and stronger materials.  As for actual reel construction design, I'm not really sure you can do much that hasn't already been tried.  Those shoot through the blank rods just mentioned come to mind.

Yo Dan,

C'mon dude,  you can't just a post an amazing picture like that without some details.

Inquiring minds want to know.  :)

OK lightninrod, what is that thing? I am perplexed. Is it a multiplier like Ronnie said? Please send a link if you can. Thanks. I have been staring at that thing for ten minutes and have to admit, I do not have a clue.

Wait, I think I know what it is. You have a relative that works at Area 51 and he smuggled this out. Strange, I do not see any alien writing on it. :-? The more I stare at it I think Ronnie might be right. It does look like some kind of fly reel. :)

it appears to be an anti reverse fly reel, where you can reel it in, but has a drag where the handle won't spin if a fish is taking line.  There are a few manufactures of these, but if that what it is... its the best looking one i've seen.

RW, are you in cahoots with my best fishing buddy? I use all Stradics and he has all Stella's and I tell him they are over priced and my Stradics work just fine for me. I used one of his reels last year one day and I have to admit they are svvvvveeeeeeeetttt. I might have to break down and buy just one I guess.

The Stella is the bomb! However, it is not a "value." I have fished Stradics for years and believe they are the "best value" in the Shimano line-up. So, all I'm saying is that you can own four Stradics for the price of one Stella, but if you only fish one spinning combination, the Stella is King.

I can vouch for that now as well. Finally got the chance to go out and test the new Stella. Boy...that thing is just a work of art. Casts like a dream...and pretty far too, even with pretty light lures. Smooth as silk on the retrieve and the drag system is top notch. I agree with everyone that I paid a hefty price tag for it, but at least I know that I am fishing with one of the finest spinning reels on the market. At least if I miss or lose a fish now, it ain't the equipment or equipment failure to blame...it's all me now. ::)

Yeah, I was just thinking about that the other day... :)

When I read RW's first post in this thread, I knew the link to the Stella was coming.  :)

As for Lightinrod's photo, don't you guys know a meat grinder when you see one???  :)
