Daiwa 103 Type F or Shimano 1000 50mg?

Featured Replies

What do you think would be better for a light lure setup, not super light but around 1/8 - 1/4 oz.

I am thinking of going with either a Daiwa 103 Type F or a Shimano 1000 50mg or maybe just a regular Shimano Scorpion (red one)

thanks

From what I have read you will be very happy with either one.

As a Shimano Posse member I got the Scorpion 1000 Mg a couple months ago and have been VERY pleased.  Ginrinpeche on Ebay has some unbeatable prices on both of them.

Thanks, thats where I am looking at them at, and I just cant make my mind up. I have always been a Daiwa fan but I still cant make my mind. Told the wife I should just buy one of each, and by the look I got from her, I dont think that would be a good idea  ;D ;D

Wanna hear something from someone who has all of them and more ?

1.- Don 't know your personal preferences, I don 't mind but ......... the handle in both Scorpion Mg and Scorpion 1000 is quite shorter than the one found in the Alphas Type F ( 70 mm vs 80 mm ), some guys don 't like them teeny handles, specially those with big hands.

2.- Scorpion Mg & Alphas Type F weight the same, 6.2 ounces, Scorpion 1000 feels like a tank next to them, obviously, it weights 8.5 ounces.

3.- Scorpion Mg & Chronarch 50 Mg, questionable durability of the finish, got both of them, love them, but that doesn 't stop me from telling you the truth, if you scratch the reel the finish peels off. Type F finish does not peel.

4.- Alphas Type F has 1 bearing in each handle knob, which makes the reel feel buttery smooth when you crank the handle.

5.- Cup shaped knobs found in the Type F are not as comfortable as Septon contoured knobs found in Shimanos.

6.- Shimanos have wet drag systems, Type F has dry drag system, any contamination on the washers with any kind of lubricant causes dry systems to pulsate.

That 's what I can say.

Advice: WHEN IN DOUBT..........PURCHASE THEM ALL !

That's my only gripe.  I am going to swap it out with a Chronarch 50 Mg handle though

I swear that I had nothing to do with that.  :-/

Forgot to add:

Scorpions have Clicking drag star, not found in the Type F.

Thanks alot Raul I really appreciate the explanation.

I take it besides the finish and the handle the Shimano seems like the way to go?

But man its hard for a diehard Daiwa guy to go with a Shimano  ;D

Not really, all are fantastic reels, it 's a give take-situation one has good things and bad ones the other one is in the same situation so ..... you can 't go wrong with either.

I have Daiwas and Shimanos, I like them both equally.

Forgot to add:

Shimanos still have that slight hadle backplay, Type F doesn 't. Never knew why there are people that complain about the handle backplay, you don 't know it 's there if nobody tells you it 's there, but all Shimanos have it, even the most expensive ones.  ::)

Hmm...  I have a CU100DSV boxed up for a return (Christmas gift) because I thought the IAR wasn't working... but you say this is normal?  My 50MG's will allow the spool to back up about 1-2mm at the rim but the CU backs up 1-1.5cm - sound normal to you?  I hate to send it for an exchange if that is how the replacement will also be.  OR I can send it back with $50 and get another 50MG.  ...lol

I just got the Type F in the mail earlier this week. Haven't fished with it yet but spooled it up and played with it.  I have 2 TD-Z's and it feels as smooth and 'solid' as them.  I have never used the 1000 MG but if it is comparable to the Chronarch MG(which I used extensively this year on a crankbait setup), I would go with the Alphas every time. I have been a Shimano guy but I really like the 'precision' feel of the Daiwa baitcasters.  I bought this primarily for finesse jigs and plastics/jig heads but can see it working well on another crankbait rig too.

my 2 cents....

Thanks Doug, I have 3 TDZ 100HSD's and I love them to death, probably my favorite casting reels.

How is the size on the Type F? I have heard there kind of small and I have rather big hands. I have TD 153HST and its about as small as I want to go size. Do you know how the size of the Type F's compare to the TD 153HSD?

Thanks,

Tommy

River W,

The overall size of the reel feels a bit smaller than the TD-Z's but not by much. If you feel comfortable with the TD-Z's, I think you will be happy with the Alphas.   Raul or another Alphas owner may step in here and correct me, but I believe the frame of the reel is the exact same size as the American version-the SOL.   If you have a store close to you that carries these, you could always take a trip and get an idea of the feel of the reel-although the Alphas is an ounce lighter.

hope this helps.

The TDZ and the Alphas are almost the same size ( got both of them  :) ) , I say almost because the height is not, the Alphas is 3 mm lower than the TDZ, the small sensation comes from those 3 mm less in height.

Flechero, handle backplay in Shimanos is completely normal, the AR is not quite "infinite" like in Daiwas, but 1-2 mm ( normal ) is not the same as 1-1.5 CM, that 's ten times more. Send it back, add 50 and get an Mg.
