Spiral wrap rod?

Featured Replies

I just came into possession of one.  The only markings on it are MHX on the grip.  It feels like a medium to me.   For those who have one how do you use it?

Just like any rod - spiral requires fewer guides in the top third of the rod than a rings-up casting rod.

They make great jigging rods.

I have 2 rods that are spiral wrap - 7' offshore slow-jigging, and 8-1/2' 7-pc rockfish assembled that way out of necessity (doesn't have enough tip guides for rings up).

My 14' surf-meat rod is 3-pc, and the guides are taped.  If I choose, I can wrap the 4 mid guides for spiral, and insert the tip section rings down.

I have an 7' MHF RX8 that is spiral wrapped.  Never considered it might work better for specific techniques.  It's a nice rod that has rarely been used.  Mostly because it is my only oddball.  Need to rectify that.  :)

I’ve got a friend who built rods as a hobby and just wanted to try building one. For a while, he made all my rods so he made a spiral wrapped rod for me. I’ve always used it exactly like all my other rods.

I got into them years ago with Bud Erhardt Fishin' Sticks.  All of my customs are spiral wrapped.  Cast further, less torque on the blank, sensitive AND, the looks on peoples faces when they are holding the rod and can't figure out what's wrong with your rod.

Also referred to as acid wrapped.
