Lee’s FLS vs Mach 2

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone, I am shopping for a new baitcaster and I was having trouble deciding between the Mach 2 and the fls. I’ve heard more good things on the Mach 2 than the fls but the fls is aluminum frame while Mach 2 is graphite frame, the fls is bigger, the Mach 2 had wind grips. There are many things on one that are better than the other and it’s causing me trouble.

which do you guys think is bettter and why?

Both Speed Spool LFS and Mach 2 SLP have the same mag brake, which I like very much on Super Duty G LFS, and bought a 2nd reel on closeout.  Good brake for casting light weights.

I'm not a fan of Winngrips, and swapped them with Abu EVA knobs (from SDS Customs in Ukraine).

(different reel TP-LFS - these are the EVA knobs)

I think the choice comes down to how hard you plan to fish the reel.  If you want a beast, it's the LFS.  If you want smaller fit in hand, it's SLP.

Winn grips are trash. The LFS is a much better reel in my opinion.

I’ll be honest I think a lot of these Lews are gimmicky to attract younger anglers. The main line of the LFS, pros, BB, heavy duty, etc are really good products.

What about the difference between aluminum and graphite frame. Is that an important factor?

The graphite frame is a misnomer and it's actually plastic mixed with trace amounts of graphite.  They (everyone) shorten graphite powder reinforced plastic down to "graphite" or further abuse such as "carbon fiber frame".   Why we let then get away with this I don't know.  It's a plastic reel and that's OK but aluminum is more rigid and will deliver more winding power under load.

The Shimano Ci4 composite frames are solid. A lot of variance in the “composite” frames from manufacturers. Just know if you buy a cheap reel with a composite frame it’s most likely just plastic.

The Mach series of Lews is a sad excuse of their name being even on those rods and reels.

When i first got into baitcasting gear i saw their line up and thought it was cool, several sponsored youtubers said they were great, and the colors were better than most of the plain black and cork combos on the shelves.

Did a bunch of research on these and learned just how bad they are, its cheap components that arent good quality at all. No where even near it. The rods snap like twigs and the reels are getting horrible reviews constantly on the places websites that sell them. Subpar materials, and once in a DSG i tried one out, it felt worse than my $30 used Black Max that was never cleaned.

The entire Mach series is 100% social media influencer hype and marketing geared towards beginners at its finest. Now are they okay and will be fine for most people? Sure. But they are worth about $30-50 for the entire combo. Instead using the marketing to their favor they charge more for them than their actual high quality, highly reviewed, and made wtih quality parts better rods and reels.

For context a Mach 2 SLP reel costs $100-120. LFS $60-100 depending on sales....

A LFS is a very basic, nothing fancy reel. But built like a tank.
