Overfished pond

Featured Replies

My friend bet me that I couldn’t catch anything out of a spot that he occasionally goes to. It is overfished, and the bass there are pretty small (3 pounds max) and have seen plenty of lures and bait. Does anyone has any suggestions

A few of the lakes I fish see pressure on a daily basis.  You have to learn to adapt, or the skunk shows up.

I usually fish with a 4 to 6 inch weightless worm, or 4" stickbait.  If there is wind I'll add a split shot up the line.

If I have a jig and craw tied on then it is a small one, usually 1/8 ounce, sometimes 1/4 ounce.  I thread on the trailer to keep the bait somewhat compact looking.

Most of the local anglers around here use mid depth to deep diving crankbaits, so I usually fish with some type of wakebait.  I will run it around vegetation and around rocks.

Like @MediumMouthBass said, look to see what everyone else is fishing with.

Good luck.

Go later or even better *earlier* than everyone hammering it and you will be greatly rewarded 😉

Not all bass will strike artificial lures ever.

Understanding bass behavior will help solve over pressured fishing.

1. Catch & Release doesn’t mean release healthy some bass don’t survive being caught.

2. The bass population isn’t all adult size bass and the larger bass are females. The adults are abou 25% of the population. In a pond with heavy pressure every bass angler is targeting the 25%, how many adult size bass do you think this pond has?

3. Fish at night and you have the pond to yourself.

Most of the places i fish are heavily pressured, but are usually less than 40-90 acres....

Makes the pressure even worse.

Ive learned that no matter how pressured the bass are, they still need to eat to survive.

Try using bigger lures or smaller lures than most people use.

If everyone is throwing a green pumpkin Jackhammer then try a white Mini Max.

And if they are using senkos (usually 5 inches) try something like a 3-4" ned rig style bait, or a giant senko. Add some scent.

Try colors you would never fish, odds are if they are crazy colors it might be something those bass havent seen before.

I had a super pressured pond, right next to our local PA Fish and Boat Commission office, its very small and shallow. I never caught any bass there, only bluegills and pumpkinseeds + the occasional pickerel. Started throwing coffee scented Ochos in weird colors like pink and white. Started catching lots of bass.

An observation ive made fishing these places is almost everyone is throwing either a texas rig, chatterbait, or a topwater (usually a buzzbait or a whopper plopper). And they are usually fishing them fast.

My advice would be to go there for a day, and dont fish. Just see what everyones using and what speed they are bringing them back. Whatever the majority are doing, do the opposite.
