Motor for a basshunter

Featured Replies

I’m thinking about a 6 hp 2 stroke or a 9.8 hp 2 stroke for my basshunter.  Is that a mistake?  What do you recommend?

Which one do you have?  The original is only rated for a 2hp. The 120 goes to a 3.5hp. I’d say a 9.9 is going to be too heavy for the plastic transom. A 6 might be okay for the bigger one but it’s over capacity.

You may make it do a backflip with a 9.9 on there!

I had a small 2 person basshunter for years when in NY fishing mostly smaller lakes. I couldn't imagine an outboad on it, although I guess maybe a 2HP could work, I would be concerned with weight and a 55lb thrust trolling motor used to push 2 of us around a lake for a good 4-5 hours, I would think with newer batteries you may get longer.

9.9HP would scare me unless we are talking about a different bass hunter and not the 2 seater plastic model which was a great fishing boat and sturdy.

if you use Facebook at all there are a couple groups on the Bass Raider and Bass Hunter’s, in the past I saw a few folks with motors posting there, you might join and post your question there if you need more opinions.

I have a Bass Raider, fwiw, my 55lb Minn Kota Endura Max weighs about 22 lbs, the 100ah lithium battery, which I keep next to the motor, is another 30.

Looking on Google the little 6hp motors that look like a weed wacker are 27ish. The 9.8’s that look like an outboard weigh 57. I don’t see the weight of the first being an issue, the 9.8 is probably too much for the transom. I believe my transom is sheet metal wrapped around the plastic with a wood core. I can see it flexing with the trolling motor just coming up to speed too fast, I suspect the 6 hp would do it too. You might have to come up to speed in a controlled manner to limit the flex.
