Dobyns fury advice

Featured Replies

I’m wanting another bait caster set up to go with my carbonate 2.0 combos. And I’m looking at the 7’ dobyns fury. I mostly Throw soft plastics, T rigs up to 1/4 weight. Finesse spinner baits 5/16 ounce. And mini max chatter baits 3/8-1/2 ounce. I’m asking a lot of one rod I know but would you guys probably go with a 703 or 704?? Thanks!!

704 or 734

I was thinking 703 or 733 for everything until I got to the 3/8 - 1/2 MiniMax. Once you put a plastic on that, I think you would be overloading the 703 or 733.

My issue is I didn't care for the Fury 734 I had. I really liked the 733 Fury I had, but my 734 was heavy and I didn't like the action. A 704 might be better, but I don't have anything to base that on.

I DO really like the 734 Sierra I have and think it would be a great option for what you are looking at, but price is a bit higher on the Sierra. Maybe you could source around for a good sale price on one.

Thanks so much guys. I’ll check out the suggestions. Honestly it was late and didn’t think about the extra weight of the trailer on baits. Duh.

Skip it. Get a Falcon Lowrider for the same price and a better rod than the Fury. You’d have to hit the Sierra line and up to get on par with a Lowrider in my opinion.

Plus, an American in Oklahoma will answer the phone if you have questions/have a problem. I like my Dobyns and will buy more, but I’d only buy them on sale. Falcon is the winner though if we’re talking normal retail price and customer service.

I think the Lowrider Lizard Dragger would be a good one to check out for your uses

Skip the Fury. Go with the new Frenzy sold at DSG only for $80. Looks 10x better than the very out of place Fury (green, black, and then a mix of cork and foam????) Ive heard it has the same sensitivity as the Fury, but for $40-50 less....

Personally in that $80-120 price range your best bet would be a Daiwa Tatula XT ($100) Falcon Lowrider ($130) or the Dobyns Sierra/Kaden (that go on sale frequently around $120). The Sierra's have a softer tip and make great rods for moving baits, whereas the Kadens are really good for bottom contact stuff, and are miles ahead of the Fury/Frenzy when it comes to sensitivity.

If you go with Dobyns a 734C is the gold standard across all lines, its not the best rod for one thing, but a good rod for many things. The 3's are practically mediums.

I’m not trying to crap on the Fury but it’s wildly overrated to me and I’ve owned a few. It used to be a decent rod for the money but as more companies have attacked that $100 mark it’s been passed by. The only redeeming quality it has in 2025 are the crankbait and swim bait specific models. The more general purpose rods are just too heavy and lack sensitivity to compete in today’s market. Look at Falcon, Ark, and Daiwa instead.

Actually,.... I think I agree with this. I had a number of Fury rods and after trying other things, I have sold the majority of them.

I think the only Fury models I still have are a few 705CB. I DO still have a few Sierras, Champion XP and Champion Extreme

If you're open to other brands in that price range I would check out the Phenix feather.

You will have to move up a power but they are a great rod.

Another option is the St Croix Black Bass...I've gifted almost all my Furys to a friend's son and the 7'1" MH/F Black Bass I got is lighter and more responsive than my old Fury 704C could ever hope to be at only $10 more.

Man! Thanks everyone lots to look at now! By the end of this season I’m sure I’ll have one picked out lol!!!!

FYI, if you have a DSG’s nearby they carry the Fury, at least ours does, you can handle one and decide for yourself.

Software won’t let me spell out the store name.

Yup, Dicks has a good selection of Dobyns and Academy has some as well depending on location. I was going to get a Fury 735 but after handling one at Academy, I went back home and ordered a Sierra 735. Sure glad I did too, much nicer stick. And the only reason I did was because they were on sale for $120 at TW.

I’m not completing bagging on Dobyns at all. I’m actually actively in the market for a KD713SF…. Just waiting on a sale. I’d never pay full retail for Dobyns. Plus, they have a nicer selection of spinning rods than Falcon does. Simple as that

733.

i'm the opposite thought.  i think the Fury punches better harder that it's weight class.   it casts awesome. sensitive enough for bottom contact (for me).  i have had 4 at one time..

which brings me to the negative.  it is by far the most easily broken in half rod of my life.  i think i have broken 3 rods since my "fishing hobby resurgence thanks to Covid" experience and they have all 3 been Fury rods.    i have two left and i'm half tempted to get rid of them by now..i am less beer budget and more champange taste.  :D

If it were me I'd go with the Sam Sobi 724c on their website over the Fury. Same price since it's on sale right now but it's basically a Kaden blank from what I've read which is a noticeable step up from the Fury line...
