I'm new to bass fishing, and I have had virtually no luck. I'm 90% sure it's purely because I don't do it as much as I'd like to, but I'd love to get recommendations about good places to fish within an hour's drive of the Long Beach/Los Angeles area. Anything at all is appreciated. Thank you.

You have so many place like Hansen dam and Balboa park to fish small lakes. Also best place and my former lake Castaic lake and lake casitas.

Your best bet is local salt water Calico Bass in the Long Beach harbor and Federal breakwater areas. Nearest bass lake is El Dorado park lake.

Legg lake maybe within your 1 hour drive window from Long Beach area.

2 hours opens up more choices.

What tackle do you have?

I suggest thinking about hiring a guide at Lake Casitas it’s a very good bass lake at this time.

My tackle is a mix of cheap medium power, Walmart combos under 6ft, and a Lews medium heavy baitcaster 7'. I think an 8ft medium power Daiwa rod with 3/4 oz to 2 oz lure rating. And an ugly stick ultra light fast action rod I've been using for trout this past season. 

MF 7’ spinning is essential for SoCal lakes for finesse presentations like drop shot, Slip shot ( finesse C-rig) and 5” wacky rigged Senko’s and jerk baits.

Your MHF casting outfit is a keeper for Texas rigged worms, C-rig, jigs, top water and frogs.

The local ponds and park lakes get pounded daily tough fishing. Your best choice is a 5” Senko wacky rigged weightless. 
I mentioned hiring a guide* at Casitas as this will save you years of trail and error.

Earlier you had mentioned that moving up to a longer drive could open up more opportunities. What would be my best bet within 1 1/2 to 2 hours? Thank you a lot for taking the time to respond and sharing your advice!

Traveling to lake Casitas and hiring Rich Tuaber guide service will save you years of learning SoCal bass fishing presentations, plus Castias is currently an excellent bass fishery.

Lake Puddingstone is about 1 1/2 or less and good now.
Lakes Castiac and Castiac lagoon, lake Piru are about 2 hours, lake Casitas a little over 2 hours.

A weightless thin senko wacky rigged for open water, Texas rigged for cover will produce at all So Cal lakes. So will drop shotting a 4” roboworm. Start with those two presentations at whatever lake you can fish at and keep at it. Eventually you’ll stick one.

I hear downtown Los Angeles has some killer bass fishing! (kidding of course)
