Topwater

Featured Replies

I use straight braid for all my top waters, anywhere from 10 lb to 30 lb. The trick is to pair the correct rod & action with the correct lb test for a particular technique. &nbsp

I used poppers exclusively with either 10 or 15 lb braid on a spinning outfit. Can chunk a 1/2 oz popper a country mile & works well for dog walking a popper too if you practice at it. Just need a rod with a good flexible tip.

I don't fish in super heavy stuff, so for me it's 99% Big Game mono in 8, 10, and 12 pound. I don't use a dedicated rig for topwater, so I use whichever rod I have with me that is best for the application. And depending on that rod/reel, determines which pound line I'm using.

If I was going to use a dedicated rod for topwater, I'd probably run 12 pound big game on it. I'd rather go light for frogs in heavy stuff, than to deal with braid tangling in the hooks of everything else.

To cure that use a small 8-12 inch leader of your favorite mono or flourocarbon. It will keep the limp braid from allowing the bait to whip around at the end of the cast and catch the trebles.
