Shaky Head Rod

Featured Replies

I am goin use this technique this year!!what kind of rod should I use to throw it?? I lean on St Croix so..I am thinkin either the 6'8"xf medium or the 6'9"xfml? thanks for the help

I use the St.Croix TBS68mxf Finesse Legend Tournament for the shaky head and I love it. It has a strong butt section to move fish out of cover.

I have this rod as well.  Although I just got it and have yet to catch a fish with it, I am very impressed with the little amount I have casted around with it.  I had the ML and ended up exchanging it for the M.  It just felt a tad under powered IMO.  Although I probably generally prefer a stouter feeling rod than most people.

I have 2 set-ups for this application; GLoomis GL3 6-6 MH spinning rod and a Team AllStar 6-9 M trigger (Wacky Worm Rod). I tried a M spinning rod but like the MH better.

yeah I was leanin towards the medium! I fish in wisconsin and I would fish it around weeds and wood and docks and I would need a stiffer rod for it! thanks guys!

I have never personally been on the water with either of those two St. Croix's, but I have played with both of them at my Gander Mountain where I work. I was not a huge fan of either of them. They seemed a little sloppy to me. However, Kistler has 3 spinning rods in their Magnesium TS lineup. A 6'9" ML drop shot rod, a 6'10" MH tube rod, and a 7' Medium All Purpose rod. I have never used the all purpose rod, but I have both the drop shot rod and the tube rod. The tube rod has a faster tip and obviously a stiffer butt section which is what you sound like you would prefer. I usually use the drop shot rod when I feel like I need to downsize to 4 to 6 lb. test. For most shaky head applications (1/16-1/4 oz.) I like the tube rod. I think I can get a better hook into the fish(especially those smallmouths) down deep, or even when I'm fishing shallow near cover so I can really move the fish away from anything dangerous. You can check kistler rods out if you have not already at www.kistlerrods.com. Hope this helps.

I have both the 6'8 "Finesse" and the 6'9 "drop shot" st. croix legend tournament spinning rods....either one would work just fine for what you want...I have to add all I fish are st. crox rods...I love them...best rod for the money by far IMO......anyways I also was going to spend some time this summer perfecting this "shaky head" way to fish...I bought a st. croix legend tournament 6'3 "shakin" rod....its med power extra fast...everyone on here will tell you to get a longer rod...but I trust st. croix...they have never done me wrong ...so if this is the rod they make for shakin....thats the rod I will give a try...Have not had a chance to use it yet...but it sure feels good in my hand.....I also live in Wisconsin...Milwaukee here....are you in any Bass clubs or fish any tournaments????

Would that shakin rod be good for jerkbaits?  I throw jerkbaits on spinning gear and the 6'8 finesse rod is a little longer then I like.  I also use a 6'0 premier rod but the casting distance isn't so good.  I saw the shakin rod in there catalog and it might be the ticket for jerkbaits.  The problem is that no stores around have this rod and if I order it I'm stuck with it.  I have ordered the small cranker rod blind and I'm happy with it.  Any INFO would be helpful thanks.

They have a rod just for jerk-baits...its the st. croix legend bass tournament TBC66MF...its 6'6 med power fast action 10-17 lb test, 1/4 to 5/8 oz lures...I just got that rod also.... GOd I cant wait any longer.....I am waiting for the ice to go out to try for some pre-spawn slow jerking with this one in one of our rivers that are open all year for sport fish here in wisconsin......the rod i am talking about is a casting rod...but I bet the 6.3 shakin rod would work fine also....its the same med power the action is a tad faster but I dont see why it wouldnt work..... if you like using spinning reels better.....when i hold them and give them the old test shake they feel like they are pretty close in stiffness....I am sure the 6'6 would cast further tho....Geeze you would think i work for St. croix...lol....

that st. croix  shaken rod is the bomb, nice for throwing the jerk baits, weightless flukes in the grass in summer, small senkos . i have pull fish up 8 lbs out the tules on 6 lb izor xxx line. match it up with a 2500 mg stradic .
