Tips for Gekkabijin conversion

Featured Replies

I've been using a Daiwa 21 GEKKABIJIN AIR tw pe special, since I could get my hands on one. Unfortunately I've had to move do to work related reason. There isn't a creek or stream in less than a $50 gas trip for me.. I still do these trips occasionally, but I've decided to research optional spool swaps after a friend had suggested that I try a different spools.

I'm unsure if this is even possible for a reel that specializes in 1 field. So far I've learned that this particular reel has an interchangeable spool with the Alphas air tw, and I know there are a variety of spools for that model but I am not savvy with spool capability. I'm simply looking for a deeper spool than the original Gekkabijin spool to do some experimenting. Attempting to up the line capacity by a couple lbs, bring the Gekkabijin into a slightly higher tier of fishing and I'll go from there. There are a lot of rivers and large ponds in my area and I'm just trying to see what is possible.

Somehow, @Junger got lost from this thread.

Here's one you may not want to pass up.

original listing - https://rorolure.com/collections/daiwa/products/roro-long-cast-titanium-spool-for-22-21-alphas-sv-tw-baitcasting-reel-alc20

If you want to make sure this spool fits, e-mail Roro about the listing above.

capacity is 130 yds 6-lb mono

80 yds 10-lb mono

65 yds 12-lb mono

This one from Ukraine has even deeper capacity

Alphas SV TW spool won't work as it's 32mm.  Gekka, Air TW, and Silver Creek Air Stream Custom all use 28mm spools.  Ray's Studio makes a deeper 28mm.

I do have a Daiwa with a spool smaller than 28-mm Ø

(wish I had the rod, telescope w/ shirt-pocket pen clip)

yeah, I found and edited that before you quoted my post.

I wouldn't even be here if @Junger handn't invited me.

Also, the quoted post offered the correct spool.

You want the Ray's Studio 28mm spool with the SV brake.  I've heard great things about that combo to the point that if I want a modern finesse reel I would get a gekka and that spool.  The SDS customs 28mm spool is the same thing.  SDS Customs just sells Ray's Studio products at markup on Ebay.  Normally I'd say avoid them and get it from the source but ordering from Aliexpress is a mess right now so Ebay is handy.

Thanks everyone for the help. I had read a post on the Gekkabijin about the Ray's spools but I wasn't able to buy it so I made my own post. I didn't think I would even be able to find a ray studio spool for this reel since AliExpress is bugging.

I'll have to look in to these spools from Ukraine as well. That Coronet mini is awesome.

SDS customs is great. I've purchased multiple spools, bearings and disassembly tools from him.  Shipping is from Ukraine, but it was swift.

However, why not leave that reel be and purchase an inexpensive reel for heavier lures?  I've had great luck at pawn shops finding Walmart reels still in the plastic.  That's how I found SDS customs.  I was looking to trick out some Lew's Speed Spools I found at a pawn.  New bearings and shallow spools and my Lew's Speed Spools preform like $100 reels.

Yet the only stock for the correct Ray's Studio spool is the link that I posted.

Ray's Studio, btw, isn't made in China, it's made in Thailand.  The normal Thailand seller is Delta Fishing - I made the effort and checked, he doesn't have stock.  If you buy a Ray's Studio item from Ali Express, tracking will show it imported into China before it's exported in an A/E shipping container to US.  Opinions are one thing, solutions another.

btw, if you follow through with knob spindle measurement recommended on your other thread, you can order spool and knobs (if correct diameter) together on the same postage.

They're the same thing branded differently from different websites.  Just get the SDS Customs branded one since it is only slightly more expensive.
